The Monadnock was ordered to Hawaii to transport marines and raise the American flag to set up a base of supplies. A cabinet officer said the monitor will not go to the Philippines but will stop at Honolulu for the flag-raising act.
Reports from Kingston and Madrid recount a Monday clash near Santiago. A stray shell struck the Vizcaya, smashing a gun and injuring its steering gear, while the torpedo boat Furor had its forward deck smashed. Madrid officials claim heavy American losses and the sinking of the Reina Mercedes with Lt Acosta killed.
The transport delivering provisions to the Santiago de Cuba fleet returned safely. Sampson prepares for an attack as reports say capitulation of the beleaguered city is imminent. A torpedo boat destroyer landed John F. Jova with dispatches to Gomez, with no Spaniards seen. Gomez is ready to resume fighting.

Kingston Jamaica reports a Spanish torpedo boat destroyer feared to be the Terror was sunk while attempting to enter Santiago harbor Monday night. The Texas intercepted and alerted the fleet, and the destroyer went down under heavy fire in minutes.
The Cuban legation reports 1300 Spaniards defeated by Cuban troops at Jiguane in Santiago province. Seventy six Spaniards were killed and one colonel seven captains and 103 privates captured.
Col. Alden led the Spanish column in sharp fighting with rebels supporting the American landing at Santiago. Ships provided protection for the landing party. The outcome of the operations is not known.
Report says American forces landing at Dalquire joined with insurgents and captured Aguadores. The combined force plans to debark the main American army under Shafter at the town, signaling a pivotal advance in the campaign.

The auxiliary cruiser Panther with 600 marines aboard sailed from Key West this morning. It is believed to head for Santiago though the original orders sent her to Porto Rico. The force will participate in shore operations.
In Trenton a rumor spread that an Adams Express car on the New York express from Philadelphia had been broken into and robbed. Officials deny knowledge of any incident.
Washington announces Senator Cullom says Adj Gen Corbin received a cablegram this morning reporting Captain Philip of the Texas killed at Santiago. The brief telegraph confirms the loss in action with no further details available.

Hutchinson Kansas June 8 the democratic convention of the seventh district endorsed Congressman Jerry Simpson who had been renominated by the populists three weeks earlier.
