A British dispatch details terrible losses sustained by British forces in South Africa since the war began. The report notes casualties among infantry and artillery units and outlines the ongoing strain on supply lines and morale.
London dispatch dated July 24 notes a general eastward advance with main Boer forces including Kruger’s group. Friction at Bronkhorst Spruit saw Francis and Hutton drive back the enemy, with Australian Lt Ellsworth killed and Broadwood capturing five wagon loads.
The national committee of Gold Democrats convened in Indianapolis to plan strategy for the current campaign. The latest tragedy is the reported death by suicide of Natalie Mayer, eldest daughter of Theodore. Other Havemeyer family incidents include George killed in a refinery Henry divorced William Jr divorced Theodore killed by disappointment Clara widowed Mrs H Havemeyer divorced died of a broken heart Mrs Henry Havemeyer bitterly contested will Henry Havemeyer the younger dead under surgeon's knife and Carley Havemeyer presumed dead by own hand.
In Brooklyn early today two U S marines were shot. Private Pierce of Company C 5th battalion U S Marine Corps died. James Costigan was wounded. Luigi Lougubuco the Italian groceryman was arrested after the incident. Bulwinkle, a witness, said the shooting followed taunts from the Italian.
The first national race congress in the history of the Negro opened in Montgomery Alabama and will run through July 27. Prominent figures including Bishop Turner Booker Washington and Prof Council will discuss long debated race issues with attendees from all regions of the country.
The United States training ship Michigan arrived in Chicago and took on the Illinois Naval Militia for a seven days cruise under Lt Commander W. Winder. The first stop is Milwaukee followed by Mackinac Island in Lake Huron.

The Herald reports a daylight robbery at George F. Pennebaker’s North Oregon Street home. A window was broken Monday, stolen items consolidated, and a black man seen leaving with a Mexican worker. Detective Juan Franco pursues both suspects and expects arrests soon.
In the county court today, two cases were dismissed. The visa case of R Thornton against R GB Stevens, a sequestration matter from the justice's court, was dismissed by the plaintiff without prejudice. The appeal of Charl Hart against Christobal Briono, from the justice's court, was dismissed.
