A Shanghai dispatch says 100,000 Chinese troops armed with Mausers near Shanghai await use in a siege. Reinforcements would aid besieged Chinamen if Woo Sung forts are attacked. Reports note foreign deaths in Pekin and a major allied victory at Tien Tsin with ships and troops holding the city and forts.
Allied and Chinese forces clash near Tien Tsin and Pekin with heavy losses on July 14 to 17. Messages from London Washington and Berlin indicate Li Hung Chang in exile and officials plan further action as Japan Russia England and the United States await reinforcements.
Dallas July 17 The board of directors of the Baptist general convention met in a called session. A committee from the state Sunday school board asked that Sunday school and general convention work be consolidated. The proposal was referred to a committee and then to the next general convention. The discussion continued this afternoon with the Baptist education commission also in session.
In Luling Texas on July 17 Joseph Cobb and Frank Lindsey dueled with pistols after a quarrel at Mt Pleasant church. Both men were carried away by friends and died shortly after the confrontation. The cause of the dispute is not known.
Assistant Chief Gates faces trial before commissioners on charges of conduct unbecoming an officer. George H. Ryan accuses Gates of abusing and cursing him. no decision announced yet.
Raton New Mexico July 17 Engineer Davis and Fireman Williams were killed when their engine derailed and overturned. Both men were buried under debris and died instantly.
El Paso Public Library association was chartered today with incorporators including Mary Stanton Grace Townsend and Fannie Clark. The event marks the formal creation of a new city library organization in El Paso.
Terry McGovern of Brooklyn defeats Frank Erne of Buffalo at Madison Square Garden in three rounds. Erne weighs 128 pounds for the featherweight clash. he is knocked down twice in the third round and retires the fight as the sponge is raised. Erne remains lightweight champion though the bout was not at that weight. McGovern says he will fight any lightweight on the same terms.

A burro ride was held last night for two visitors from Denison, Mrs Cummings and Mrs Wedmore. About twenty people joined the outing, traveling to the race track for supper and returning near midnight.
