Washington December 4 reports indicate Congress opens amid focus on the Cuban question and the Hawaiian annexation treaty. Early committees prepare appropriation bills. expectations point to a shorter session and no broad financial legislation this year.
The largest western Irish fair opens at the Lake Front armories under the Hibernians. Proceeds fund an Emmet memorial hall for Irish society meetings. Thirty two counties contribute soil for the floor and a 32 county booths exhibit includes a Blarney Castle replica and an Ireland map. Archbishop Feehan and Mayor Harrison expected to speak.
New Orleans opens its winter race meet after a three week postponement caused by yellow fever. Over 1,000 people, including many top riders, are quartered on the track and stakes for the meeting total 25 000 dollars. The City Derby is scheduled for this afternoon.
The floating grain elevator Columbia caught fire in a morning blaze and was towed to the middle of the Hudson River where it burned to the water’s edge. Estimated loss stood at $145,000.

Washington dispatch reports Miss Christine Bradley will not christen the battleship Kentucky. She informed the governor and her father, asking him to appoint Miss Richardson, who had a light promise from Mr Herbert when secretary of the navy. Bradley's action is highly commended in Washington.
Lincoln Neb December 4 William J Bryan has started on his trip to Mexico. He will travel by easy stages to Galveston and give several speeches in Oklahoma and Texas. Mrs Bryan will join him before crossing the border. Gen Crittenden accompanies Mr Bryan.
Washington December 4 Judge Day explained his stay in the state department and refusal of the attorney generalship as plausible. The president will appoint him to the Supreme Court upon Judge Gray's retirement four months hence.
Thorn arrives at Sing Sing prison escorted by Captain Methven and Sheriff Dahl. He is taken directly to the death house for solitary confinement until his scheduled execution.
President McKinley departs Canton this afternoon at three o'clock for Washington and will stay there until Congress opens. He may depart Monday evening if plans permit.
Chicago reports George Bogart former Evanston city clerk was sentenced to the penitentiary for embezzling eight thousand dollars from Evanston city funds.
In Harrisonville Missouri on December 4 a first degree murder verdict was returned in the Fr Batls Soper case. He killed his wife and two children with an axe in April 1891, shocking the community.
The final treaty of peace between Turkey and Greece was formally signed by representatives of the two governments at 3:30 this afternoon in Constantinople.
In St Louis two men are reported to have died by their own actions. John Henderson, a printer, took morphine during the night. Chas Krauf, a baker, shot himself this morning.

Milwaukee clerics from the east and west gather for the fiftieth anniversary of the cornerstone laying at St John Cathedral. Cardinal Gibbons and Archbishop Ireland send regrets. Archbishop Katzer will preside at pontifical high mass with Bishop Shanneley of Jameston delivering the sermon and Bishop O Gorman of Sioux Falls giving an address on church constitution.
A Portland petition signed by Judge Gilbert, Judge Bellinger, Judge Sherer and leading lawyers asks President McKinley not to appoint Judge McKenna to the supreme bench. They say his reputation lacks the needed learning and decisiveness for a high judicial post. Washington reports Attorney General McKenna will not discuss the protest, though supporters say the protest is at odds with his nomination.
TOPEKA reports Jerry Simpson of Medicine Lodge Kansas will retire at term end. A train load of cattle arrived for Corrallos Castle Company.
Washington reports from Bogota that Colombia ends the campaign with General Caro leading liberals and General Reyes backing conservatives. A 15 000 strong army stands ready for possible emergency action and a winner may exile the rival to preserve peace.
London dispatch reports the pope’s health again causes serious Vatican concern. Dr. Lappioni forbids exhausting ceremonies and the pope’s sixtieth anniversary mass has been abandoned.
Secretary Long ended the debate by naming Governor Bradley's daughter to christen the new battleship Kentucky at its January launch.
