College professor named to Edmonds School Board

Edmonds Community College administrator Steven J. Hanson of Lynnwood, 16429 67th Ave West, was chosen from 10 candidates to fill the Edmonds School Board seat vacated by Richard Allen. Hanson, 35, directs humanities and social sciences, holds a master’s from Eastern Washington University, and is pursuing a Gonzaga doctoral program. He favors traditional core instruction with strong arts and music emphasis and cites concerns over teacher morale and budgets. Previously he taught psychology and led the social science division at Big Bend Community College.

Dedication set for Edmonds cemetery May 30

Edmonds Cemetery on Ninth Avenue near Westgate will be dedicated Monday May 30 in an 11 a.m. ceremony with local organizations. The event follows a major restoration after the Hubbard estate deeded the land last year. Burial lots are for sale, with about 1 000 plots and urn garden space.

South County housing boom drives 1983 permits rise

In the first quarter of 1983 South County issued 141 building permits for new single family homes, up from 20 a year earlier. Brier leads growth with 126 permits across three developments including Brierwood, Lyons Creek and Hidden Valley, as Mayor Wayne Kaske notes 40 percent undeveloped land remains. The Swamp Creek corridor near the King County line is opening to development via sewer extensions, signaling a broad economic upturn.

Edmonds School District property appraised at $4.4 million

Four Edmonds School District sites including the administration center and bus maintenance facility were appraised at about 4.4 million by Yerkes and Associates. The district may sell or lease these valuable properties as part of a facilities study due May 23, with recommendations for each site. Discussions involve relocating the administration center and moving the maintenance facility, while undeveloped 164th Street Southwest land lies near a private school and mobile home parks.

Mountlake Terrace eyes landlord billed water rules

Seventy five tenants a month leave unpaid water trash and sewer bills in Mountlake Terrace prompting discussion of shifting payment responsibility from tenant to landlord. The council preliminarily approved an ordinance change to bill owners, with tenants address option, aiming to curb delinquent accounts. Political divides emerged with council members arguing over tenant protection versus city finances. Final action slated for May 16 with possible implementation later in May.

New homes boost Edmonds city building pace

Edmonds issued permits for 15 new single family homes valued over 1 million dollars in April plus 240000 in duplex projects, pushing the month’s total to 1.4 million and year to date to 7.9 million. Banks of named builders and addresses reflect active development with Homeland Homes, Stewart Homes, Belt Homes and others receiving approvals. The April figure leads the 1982 total and outpaces 1981 for the same period.

Edmonds Fire Dept to Burn House for Training Exercise

The Edmonds Fire Department will burn a house at 8728 Bowdoin Way next weekend for a training exercise. The May 14 and 15 burn will provide realistic conditions for firefighters, said assistant fire chief Ron Schirman.
