Teachers Pay Support Bill Targets State Revenue
Five young veteran House members in Austin will introduce a bill for about 28 million in new taxes on natural resources to fund education and social programs. The plan earmarks 26 million for a $2000 minimum teacher salary, 10 million for rural schools, with the rest for welfare or a permanent fund for state colleges. The move responds to pressure from the Texas State Teachers Association and tests campaign promises on tax-free expansion of state services.
