Charles Brounsenardel, 40, of Jones Creek, dies at SPJST Hall in Thijon after collapsing during a dance at 9 30 Sunday night. He is survived by his wife and two daughters. A deep natural gas test is planned near East Bernard by California Oil Co, with Felmont Corp contracted to drill a 7500 foot well by March 8, involving multiple major operators in the Union of California block region.

Funeral Services for Mrs Josephine Miller

Funeral services were held Saturday morning at the Mentz Catholic church for Mrs. Josephine Burtiachell Miller of Columbus formerly of Mentz. She lived in Columbus ten years and died at age 70. Her husband had died earlier. Survived by five daughters Lizzie Lillie Josephine Mollie Emme and Ed Braden. Burial by Rev. Fathers Schumanskel and Rocca.

East Bernard Bridge Widening Affects Traffic and Safety

The concrete Bernard River bridge east of East Bernard is being widened about three feet with three more on the south side for a sidewalk, increasing total width. The contract costs roughly $17,500. The narrow structure has been linked to at least three deaths at the bridge.

Veterans State Service Officer to Visit Here

Miles Wasson, veterans state service officer, will be in Eagle Lake all day Wednesday March 2 at headquarters to assist veterans and dependents in establishing government benefit claims under current laws. Workers Conference Meets Here Tuesday

Rotary Committee Seeks Altair Road Connection

A committee from Eagle Lake Rotary Club and local officials appeared before the Texas State Highway Commission in Austin to urge a hard surfaced link from Eagle Lake to Altair connecting with No 1 highway. The commission received the request favorably though no construction promises were made. Pete Reading accompanied the group back from a university visit in Texas.

A union meeting of city churches will be held Sunday evening at the Baptist Church with Rev. Mr. B. B. Lee presiding. Evening services at other churches have been dismissed to allow their members to join this gathering.

Local Kilgore Firemen Conquer Oil Well Fire

Kilgore firemen led by Meltonum of Kilgore formerly Magle Toke tackled a dangerous Dig oil well blaze threatening the city. With three partners they directed water sprays to protect themselves as a derrick collapsed. The team reached the burning wells and shut off the flow, credited to Hane who helped turn the nozzle.

Rape Case Set For Hearing Next Monday

Bennie Randall a Negro charged with criminal assault on a 78 year old white woman near Columbus faces trial in Columbus district court Monday as spring term nears close. Attorneys Frika of Columbus and Larson of Eagle Lake represent the defendant. Sheriff Mayes is credited for arrest and a signed confession by Randall plus Manuel Garcia charged as an accomplice who did not enter the home. Also noted are past week dispositions including suspended sentences for theft and burglary and five year sentence for theft over $50. Anderson Eagle Lake local suspect. Divorce actions granted include Clary Wilson et al and Ollo Henderson et al. Damages awarded in two Greene Bros cases totaling $83,000 and $5,000.

Pastor and Wife Honored at Church Farewell Social

After a Wednesday prayer meeting the Baptist congregation gathered in the church basement for a farewell social honoring Reverend Lee and his wife. Mrs Reed contributed a handsome occasional chair as a memento. Church ladies served sandwiches coffee and cake to a large turnout.

Canning Plant Opens For Hominy and Kraut

Mrs. Lin Tilson leads the Eagle Lake canning plant effort as cabbage is canned into kraut and corn for hominy. The project aims to recruit all gardeners to supply produce before spring starts. Within two weeks the plant will process hundreds of bushels of vegetables. Mr and Mrs N S Davidson and children Sonny and Sameny visited from Huntsville on Sunday.

Resignation of Rev Bruner S Lee as Eagle Lake Baptist pastor

Rev Bruner S Lee, pastor of the Eagle Lake Baptist Church for four and a half years, resigns to serve at Angleton. He and his family depart after serving since November 1933, with farewell services planned. A successor has not yet been named, but is expected soon.

Contract Set for Paving on Highway 71

The state highway commission awarded a $200,913 contract to H. B. Zachry Company for 15 miles of concrete pavement on Highway 71 from 5 miles south of Altair to Columbus, with work likely to start within weeks. The panel tabulated $1,489,073 in low bids on 22 projects and planned more bids around March 22 as part of a spring construction program.
