John Dennis Jr of Wharton died Wednesday in Johns Hopkins Hospital Baltimore after an operation for a brain issue. His parents Judge and Mrs JH H Dennis of Wharton were notified by wire. Dennis had been ill since June and is survived by his mother a farmer from Eagle Sage and extended family in Cleburne.
Twe Dunican Ranch polo team prepared to face A&M next Sunday after their match at Station field was postponed due to wet conditions. Members rode out late Saturday, with Miss Lezetta Walker of Blair noted in town on Wednesday.
A number of 144s whose names have been on the relief roll are working daily at the relief office sewing project making sheets pieces and comforters. The Texas relief commission will absorb the finished items as surplus commodities. Relief office head Ruder Via asked the Headlight to state that no new jobs are created and that only families already on the relief rolls are used for this work.
The Eagle Lake Little Theatre announces the play The First Mrs Fraser to be staged Friday at 7 45 in the High School Auditorium. Directed by Mrs W C Reed the cast features Mrs I V Duncan as Janet and Harry Larsen as James Priser with Noel Parker and others in supporting roles. Tickets 25 cents adults 15 cents children go on sale Monday at Lunas Drug Store.
Attendance at Avalon Wednesday featured 25 children from Engle Columbus and Garwood dancing pupils of Miss Lillian McCurdell. The program included Rabbit Reed, a blackface comedian, and three Houston pupils. Mr and Mrs A H Brown and Duanne of Crown Point visited Mrs T W Weatherall and other relatives. Mr Eba Herbert was a Friday visitor in the J B Barker home.
The Headlight reports a chat with Mr. C. S. Hillboldt of Sealy and Dallas Hillboldt visiting from Sealy. Hillboldt, 78, is recovering from a major operation at Houston hospital and expects to ride again in four months after a yearlong restriction.
A sale of 125 white face Hereford steers to Chas. von Lengerke set a top price reportedly the highest since World War days. The Wilson Bros. stock sold for 42.50 per head and were delivered yesterday. Von Lengerke plans to keep them on local grass briefly before shipping to Kansas pasture, prompting much comment on the record price.
Mrs Fannie B. Lee, widow of Rev Geo H. Lee and mother of Rev Bruner Lee, died Tuesday evening in Houston after a long, devoted life as a church worker. Survived by daughter Mrs J E Cheick and three sons Horace A Lee Rev Bruner Lee and Rev George H Lee. Funeral held at First Baptist Church in Houston.
Mrs H D McIntosh warmly hosted the Wednesday bridge club in her apartment with a George Washington motif. Eight members enjoyed refreshments as Mrs Willie Mae Reading received high score prize, a chromium lamp, after a night of bridge and fellowship.
A church birthday party will be held at Mrs. A. Lb. Baring's on Tuesday February 26 inviting every church member to bring or send their birthday offering. Proceeds support the Presbyterian Emend at Kerrville debt. The ladies will hold a bonnet union and food sale on Saturday March 2 at a to be announced location. The Woman's Auxiliary met Tuesday afternoon for a study of foreign missions.
Maney, known as Woods, shot Sunday in Houston after an argument over a car battery. He dies in a Houston hospital and his funeral, for him and his uncle John Gates, is postponed to Sunday in Eagle Lake where a double service will be held. The defense or suspects are unnamed. authorities report a suspect held but no charges filed. The deceased’s mother, Nancy Woods, works in Houston and cannot attend a different day.
F M Dromgoole has been named route man for the Eagle Cleaners and will visit Matthews Eldridge Garwood Nata Bonus and Lissie to solicit cleaning and pressing. He asks residents to contact him for first class service. He plans weekly visits Monday Wednesday and Friday in the order listed for pickups and deliveries.
Nineteen teens and adults attended the Nada dance Wednesday with 185 tickets sold for free entry. The event featured a two mask format with twelve to fifteen maskers seen on the floor. Clara Malek won first prize as Queen of Ed, Frank Malik earned second for a bale of cotton, and Charles Kulicuk with Louie Waligura shared third as twin devils. R W Heffley escaped serious injury after a ten foot fall in a barn near Lown. He landed on his face but remained unhurt except for a bruised cheek. He plans to install a parachute in the future.
Farmers report potato planting underway with seeds going into ground in good condition. Despite earlier delays from Ure gains, fields are in good shape and planting conditions favor a crop. Most planting uses native seed.
Thirty five men have started on the PWA airport project north of town, resuming progress after a year. A $6000 appropriation funds labor with the city supplying ground work, graders and treaters. Runways will be 60 feet wide, the east runway 2000 by 500 feet and the north-south runway 827 by 500 feet, graves laid to center lines for weather readiness.
