Little Girl Burned to Death in Wake County

Death of Charles McCauley in Orange County

Shooting Near Nelson Leaves Haywood Tharp Injured
Andrew Clark is at large after a Saturday morning shooting near Nelson that wounded Haywood Tharp, a colored man, at Lincoln hospital. Police describe a disturbance at a mill yard near Nelson where workers fled. three shots were fired, with two or three bullets hitting Tharp in the back, hip, and chest area. He was brought to Lincoln hospital in Durham for treatment as doctors hope to save his life amid serious injuries.

In the mayor's court Friday John Freeman and Vernon Jordan faced testimony by Robert Smith. Freeman was then linked to the case and sent to the grand jury under bond while Vernon remained in hospital. Walter Whitted and George Eaton fought at a factory. Whitted posted $50 bond and Eaton $25.
