Regular correspondence notes corn planting advancing in the area and cotton being chopped. Mentions bees, illnesses, and social events at local homes, with arrivals from Durham and Trinity College. Several accidents and farm updates follow including equipment issues and crop prospects.
Farmers at Chub Lake hustle to plant tobacco with upcoming crops and a planned crowd gathering next Monday. Marion Carver hosts plant beds and offers surplus plants. A marriage at Oak Grove church on May eight unites Hattie Long and Walter Clayton before their Jamestown trip.
Farmers are busy planting tobacco and dealing with cut worms. Lula Carpenter and Luetta Bragg of Durham visited relatives near Redwood and attended services at Roberson’s Grove church. Mr. J. W. Roberson and family traveled to see relatives, with several local social notes including Lena Creech and the Weaver sisters.
Last Friday in Durham, a day out with family included Mrs. Ferrell and others visiting. Fisherman Jimmie Hill reported a five pound catch at Mangums mill. D S Balls’ new residence nears completion. Turner & Hill relocate to a new store and stock remains ready for customers. Mt Bethel church schedules children’s day next Sunday May 19 with Rev H M North assisting.
The note describes neighbors busy cooking for a May meeting and a Friday fish fry. It lists callers Charles Clayton Sam Oakley Charlie Carr Henry O Carr at J B Harris, visits by Miss M J Harris C T Chatham Mollie Clayton, a hay ride to Pass Mill, and Daisy Duncan visiting cousins Madie and Semorah Harris for a pleasant time.
Moses P. Cole of Durham died Wednesday at 8 15 in his home 420 Spring street after a lingering illness. He was 54 and survived by a widow two children two brothers S J Cole J Ed Cole and five sisters. Funeral was held Thursday at 2 pm from his home and burial followed at Maplewood Cemetery with Rev T A Smoot of Main Street Methodist church officiating.
Revenue officers conducted a raid in the northwest part of the county early this week destroying four stills averaging over one hundred gallons each. Fermenters were cut down and other property damaged. Three owners were at home, one found in the bushes. No arrests were made.
City aldermen concluded a long session naming officers for a two year term. G. C. White remains city engineer at 1500 dollars per year for half time. J. W. Rigsbee elected tax collector with fee cut to one percent. J. R. Patton becomes assistant clerk at 1500 dollars yearly. New tax collector to assume duties in October. All other salaries stay unchanged.
Mrs. Sarah Gulley died Tuesday morning at age 69 in West Durham at her daughter Mrs. Ben Perry's home. Funeral was held Wednesday and burial at Markham burying ground. Louis Thomason, son of E. Thomason, died of pneumonia on Duke Street. Funeral and interment at Maplewood cemetery. Durham Merchants Association elected officers: J. H. Sneed president, T. M. Gorman vice president, A. J. Pollard secretary, R. C. Everett attorney, others directors. Also notice of new serial starting next issue.
Fragmentary notes claim Panama and Erie Canal machinery work and paint costs, praising a paint by M. Zine and M. White for durability. Hackney Bros of Durham advertise repainting services as a contractor option.
