Death notices for J W Davis and J P Cutts in Durham

Two Durham obituaries detail the deaths of J W Davis age 73 of Roxboro and Liberty streets and J P Cutts age 63 of South Street. Davis was a Confederate veteran with three brothers and two sisters from Louisburg family also survived by five children and many relatives. Cutts, a former police sergeant and contractor, leaves eight children four sons and four daughters and a wife. his death followed a long illness. Interments at Maplewood cemetery and services conducted by Rev E R Leyburn and Rev T A Smoot.

Mrs E C Hailey Dies in East Durham at 63

Mrs E C Hailey aged about 63 died at her East Durham home after a period of feeble health. Born in Person county she was the daughter of Thomas and Mary Wrenn and was twice married. Her first husband John Morton left two children J T Morton and Mrs Della Andrews. She left a husband and three brothers James W Wrenn of Chilton Texas A N Wrenn near Eno River and J C Wrenn.

Funeral Held for Local Resident in Driver Avenue Home

The funeral for a city resident was held at the family home on Driver Avenue Wednesday afternoon. The remains were interred in Markham burying ground. Rev. J. A. Dailey led the service, with many kin from Person County in attendance.

New Residence Burned At Lamond Avenue

Last Wednesday night between 9 and 10 o clock the nearly finished residence of Prof. Ernest Tillett on Lamond avenue was burned in an entire loss valued at 3500 to 4000 with 3000 insured. Contractor W J Pettigrew built it and bears the loss since transfer had not occurred. Fire origin unknown but suspected to have started from workmen’s fuel. Pettigrew could not account for the fire. both he and Tillett checked for embers earlier.

Aged man dies after brief illness in Durham

J R Bailey aged man died Tuesday after being found near death. He and his son had moved from Sussex County Virginia and lived over a bicycle shop near Five Points. The son called Dr N P Roddie and the body was sent to Watts hospital but he died. He had no known relatives here and was buried in Maplewood cemetery.

Cottage Fire In Pearl Mill Section Damages Rigsbee Estate

A small cottage in the Pearl Mill area burned last Monday afternoon. Firefighters saved adjoining property. the house belonged to the Rigsbee estate.

Judge Prefers L. and M. Paint for Durable Finishes

Judge W. 8B. Simmons of Fincastle Virginia says his J. & M. Paint held color for 21 years on his residence and that five years ago he switched to another brand which failed. He will now use L. and M. exclusively believing its zinc hardening and wear rating. L. and M. paint costs about $1.20 per ton and has donated to two churches. Sold by Hackney Bros in Durham.
