A rural column notes pleasant days and upcoming frost risks, with local youths quitting parties to work. It mentions numerous visits, marriages, hunts, and family news from Rougemont, Durham, and nearby towns, including a 290 pound pig kill and a quiet marriage at Sim Wilkins' residence.
County commissioners ordered the Ellerbe Creek bridge on Roxboro road closed for about six weeks for construction of a new bridge. During the closure, traffic to and from Durham will detour via the Pearl Mill road.
Simeon Bullock, a fugitive from justice since early November 1906, was arrested this week and returned to Orange County to face charges. He had shot his father in law Wiley Simms with a shotgun amid domestic troubles, sparking a countywide stir and a $25 reward offered by the sheriff.
In Durham court this week several civil actions were closed or paused awaiting a U S Supreme Court ruling on the Royal Arcanum matter. Notable settlements include Brenizer v Arcanum and related cases stayed. other filings such as Bragg oil and local car collision suits yielded damages and dismissals.
William R Dollar died at his home on Parker Street last Wednesday evening after a lingering illness. He was 50, survived by a wife and one child. A painter by trade, his funeral was held from the home Thursday afternoon, conducted by Rev. G T Adams of Trinity Church, with interment in Maplewood cemetery.
Walter A. Dean of Pittsboro was brought here Wednesday and taken to Watts hospital where he underwent knee surgery. The amputation above the knee was entirely successful and the patient is doing well.
In East Durham Tuesday night D. T. Strickland reported a badly wanted man fired on him and fled. Strickland later claimed the shooter was Emerson, wanted in South Carolina for murder. Officers learned Emerson had surrendered Monday and arrested Strickland, who admitted past detective work and lacking credentials. He was charged with carrying a concealed weapon and bound over to court in $25 bond.
Will Brown 17, son of Mrs. Julia Brown, collapsed and died during a recess game at Schley school in Little River township, 7 miles northeast of town. He had been warned about heart trouble and fell at third base after saying it was hot. Funeral at New Sharon Thursday evening, Rev. M. M. McFarland officiating.
Mrs. Dena Jones aged 80 died suddenly last Thursday from apoplexy while living with her daughter Mrs. J R Patton. She leaves one daughter and four sons including John W. Jones of Tarboro and J T G P and R J Jones of the city. Funeral from Mrs Patton home Morris street at 2 30 this afternoon, Rev E R Leyburn officiating. Interment in Maplewood cemetery.
