A three to four year old boy, son of Mr and Mrs S R McBroom, West Durham, died after clothes ignited from an open grate. Despite attempts by mother and physicians, the flames caused fatal injuries. The tragedy, occurring about 7 30 Saturday morning, echoes a similar prior incident in West Durham.
A Saturday fire destroyed an old heart pine fertilizer factory near Commonwealth cotton mill. The blaze, started by a passing engine, spread quickly in wind, leaving only ruins after about an hour. Loss estimated 4000 to 5000 dollars with insurance at Richmond.
Obituary notices report the death of Coleman Burch at eighty after pneumonia. Funeral held near the family homestead with extensive Durham Orange Person Alamance county relations. Also noted are death notices for Mrs Mattie Sherron and Ed McAdams, plus a closing promotional line about a premium knife.
Several Durham pulpits were filled by noted divines Sunday. Dr Theodore Heysham preached at Second and First Baptist churches about the San Francisco earthquake relief. Rev Oliver J Whilden addressed the deaf at St Phillip. Rev S S Best preached in Cary. Rev G H Church led Edgemont meetings and will assume pastorate April 1. A bill in the legislature seeks a charter for Peoples Saving Bank of Durham to be run by Black trustees with capital 100000 paid in and 50000 authorized. Charter members include Robert Fitzgerald, John Merrick, and several doctors.
A small advertisement touts a home remedy named Cyclone for catarrh. It instructs mixing one half ounce Fluid Extract Dandelion one ounce Compound Karyon and three ounces Compound Syrup Sarsaparilla with doses after meals and at night. It claims to cleanse kidneys and blood of catarrhal poisons and references a renowned specialist.
