Double Hanging in Durham County Shackles Two Men

Hodges and Freeman Jones were executed together inside the Durham jail. The scene drew crowds as the two men faced the scaffold, each delivering final statements about repentance and forgiveness. Hodges spoke of salvation and urged others to seek heaven, while Jones blamed whiskey for his crime and expressed readiness to die.

Pretty Home Wedding in Durham Carthage Area

A quiet Wednesday wedding at Mr T B Fuller East Main street united Miss Adelaide Ramsey and Mr J E Hancock. Rev F R Leyburn officiated as the couple left for Carthage to reside. Only friends and relatives attended, with decorations adding a festive touch. Hancock, manager of the Durham and South Carolina road and Chatham Lumber, is popular locally and his bride, daughter of Captain N A Ramsey, is described as capable and charming.

Y. M. C. A. Begins Campaign For Durham Building

A Durham banquet at the Hotel Carolina boosted inter est in a local Y M C A. Speakers included Gov. Glenn and G C Huntington. Subscriptions announced total 16 520 toward a 35 000 goal with 13 500 raised on opening night. Campaign offices opened at the courthouse with G W Watts and E J Parrish among leading donors.

County Commissioners Update and Road Work Plans

The county commissioners met this week to discuss the road question and prepare bills for the legislature to pay jurors two dollars a day and commissioners three fifty, plus better courthouse accommodations. Gilmore Thompson narrowly escaped serious injury when a wagon carrying lumber was struck by a train on the Southern road. the wagon split in two and the team separated, but he survived with injuries.
