Purse Snatchers Held Up Main Street in Broad Daylight

A bold purse snatching occurred on Main Street Friday near noon when a negro man grabbed Miss Martha Henshaw’s wrist purse from a Whitmore bakery counter and fled toward Heyti with a bread bundle. The incident follows a rise in bold thefts, including hold-ups and robberies, and references a recent police court case involving Jack Crabtree.

Indecent Exposure Charge Filed Against W A Tindall

W A Tindall, a 25 year old married man, was arrested Friday afternoon near Lakewood park on a charge of indecent exposure. Two women identified him, and he posted 100 bond after waiving examination. he has prior arrests for similar conduct. Sheriff and police tracked him to Edgemont. he was later released until Saturday morning trial.

Death of a Child Margaret Rigsbee

Little Margaret Rigsbee died at age three years seven months on the Rigsbee road after a brief illness from threatened trouble and pneumonia. Funeral services were held Monday at the family home conducted by Rev. P. H. Massey, with burial on the home property. She left her father Albert Rigsbee her mother two sisters and two brothers.

Elk Memorial Service Draws Large Durham Crowd

Last Sunday afternoon at the Academy of Music a large audience attended the annual memorial service for the Durham Lodge of Elks. Hon Locke Craig delivered the address. Victor S. Bryant read a eulogy of Sheriff F. D. Markham. The program featured a Durham choir and orchestra, with a list of the deceased including Samuel Henderson and F. D. Markham.

Durham Grand Jury Convenes as 249 Criminal Cases Open

Superior Court at work with Judge Cooke presiding on the Durham criminal docket. The grand jury was sworn with J. H. Southgate foreman and fourteen members. The charge urged indictments for minor illegal sales, especially cigarettes and weapons to minors, and for dope related offenses. Jail cases began to move swiftly after the proceedings.

Death of E. C. Hailey in East Durham

E. C. Hailey a 74 year old carpenter of East Durham died Monday morning at his Driver avenue home after a stroke of paralysis last Sunday night. He had been in feeble health for years and left no close family. He was survived by many relatives in the area. Funeral and burial followed in the afternoon.
