Death of John Hughes in Orange County Wagon Accident
John Hughes son of Sheriff John Knox Hughes of Orange County was killed when a wagon ran over him near the Orange and Alemanece line on Friday evening. He and Lem Rice, his uncle, had been to Burlington for mill machinery and were returning when Hughes leaned forward to strike the mules, slipped, and fell under the wheels. He died within minutes after being placed in a wagon and taken to a nearby house.
