Data describes Diaz born in Oaxaca on September 15 1930. He worked as an errand boy and served in the War Reform era 1854 61. He fought at Cinco de Mayo on May 5 1862 and rose to secretary of war under Juarez. He opposed Juarez for a third term, led the opposition, fled to the United States, returned with an army and on November 26 1876 proclaimed himself president. He was elected in April 1877, did not seek re election in 1889, was named again four years later and remained active thereafter.
