The Sun to Shine On promises to spread a Democratic ray across Arizona next Friday July 2 as Sam W. Small launches THE PHOENIX SUN. The morning paper pledges to drive hypocritical democratic fogs and become a powerful force for good in the state.
J C Day proprietor of Guthrie store dies at the home of Mr Short. A member of the Knights of Pythias lodge he was widely liked and his passing shocks friends with few details about the death.
Bulletin notes Mrs Edwards and her sister from Pima arrive in Solomonville. Edwards will be the new principal of the county seat schools for the coming school year. Luther Green of Thatcher bought a Studebaker hack from Solomon Commercial Co. while transacting business in the county seat.
Mrs. T. S. Bunch and her son Tommie travel to Flagstaff with her husband’s widow and younger son. They plan to visit Mrs. Bunch’s mother and possibly settle in Flagstaff as their future home.
The Arizonian notes the betrothal between Miss Winifred Barnes of Silver City and Mr. Frank R. Coon of Lordsburg. Barnes is described as the daughter of Judge R. P. Barnes and a refined woman. Coon, cashier of the First National Bank of Lordsburg, is praised as a reputable businessman. They plan to be at home to friends after August first in Lordsburg.
Er W Day of the York Valley hosted a Sunday gathering for many friends. Soft drinks lunch watermelon and ice cream were served. Attendees included Alex and Dan Fraser Dan McPhail Mr Bausserman and Walter Hutchins. Probate Judge Woods sends a subscription from Solomonville.
Clifton dispatch reports the Arizona Copper Company Ltd will build and enlarge reduction works near Clifton three miles below the Frisco site across North Siding. Dr L D Ricketts of Cananea is hired as consulting engineer for the smelter project, with land contest potential and placer owner opposition noted. The plant promises hundreds of high paying jobs during construction and operation.
The 1911 assessment roll has been turned in by the county assessor and is open for public inspection. It is expected to reach near 3 million dollars but must be approved by the Equalization Board before passage.
Recently Miss Claudia Aker and Miss Smith of Clifton accompanied by Dr. Briley and Joe Fraser of Duncan rode sixty miles through rugged mountains. They reached Twin Peaks camp and were hosted by Mr. Dinsmore and wife, then journeyed to the Smelt camp worked by Fraser Brothers and Mr. Newhouse. The outing offered pictures que scenery with ruins of the Astec race era and old outlaws corrals. The party faced a drenching rain but were prepared with slickers.
The cement stone church was erected 1907 8 under Rev J D Boone supervision. It recently hosted the Southern Arizona Presbytery and reports steady growth. Services held twice on Sundays with Sunday School Prayer Meeting Choir practice and Ladies' Aid. Trustees are W C Cheatham W E Burtcher and J A Martin. Pastor Rev J Craig Watt.
Lordsburg plans a three day Fourth of July celebration from July 3 to 5 with a barbecue, races, ball games, bronco riding, fireworks and a grand ball. Notable events include matched El Paso and Duncan horses, free for all race, and several child foot races with cash prizes. Over $700 has been subscribed to fund the festivities and railroads offer excursion rates.
J W Tifft manages Tom Larkins place in Sheldon Arizona with about 40 acres to cultivate this season. Henry W Duncan in Duncan Arizona grows about 30 acres with focus on Irish potatoes. Claud Packer from Duncan Arizona reports 19 acres under irrigation producing 571 sacks with high yields in corn and barley. S Y Olney of Duncan Arizona advocates for regional agricultural guidance. W L Sanders of Duncan Arizona develops a business farming plan with 450 Rhode Island Reds and 200 fruit trees this year. Mrs Almeda Layton of Duncan Arizona runs poultry and dairy with several hundred Black Minorcas and berry production. B A Wilson of Duncan Arizona champions high Gila Valley crops including sweet potatoes and 80 bushels of barley per acre. A D Cheatham of Duncan Arizona shifts to business farming with black Minorcas and dairy cows. J J Brown of Sheldon Arizona pioneers irrigation with a 25h. p. F M oil engine and 60 ft water rise to cultivate watermelons and cantaloupes.
A farmer estimates multi cut alfalfa yields with second cutting at 10 dollars a ton producing about 20 dollars per acre. He expects four to six tons per acre yearly, with possible prices from 10 to 15 dollars per ton, yielding 60 to 100 dollars gross per acre. The figures are from a reliable farmer, not a real estate agent.
Former residents of the val ley plan a July Fourth celebration on the Gila four miles above Duncan New Mexico. They will host a free barbecue provide abundant water by a pump and arrange a pleasant sociable day in the shady grove where the road crosses the river. All are invited and expect a joyful event.
Local notes report box rent due and residents in town. Weather records show scorching heat with 104 last Saturday 106 Monday and 106 yesterday. Residents include Mrs F W Wagner from Twin Peaks mining Camp and Secretary A N Newhouse of Twin Peaks Company visiting on business.
Claude Taylor and Mrs Margrette Billingsley celebrated their eighth birthday together last Friday at Mrs Billingsley s home. They have never spent a birthday apart and are always entertained at one or the other s home when this anniversary arrives.
A triplet born to Mrs Gill six weeks ago died Monday. The surviving twins, cared for with bottle feeding, faced hardship from hot weather. The community mourns the loss and offers sympathy to the mother.
Several leading citizens plan a personal visit to the Twin Peaks mining camp this week. If the inspection convinces them, they will buy stock and become boosters for Twin Peaks. Old timers and practical miners predict the district will soon rank among the state's great producers.
