In Clifton a deputy sheriff Garnett and a Mexican suspect were killed last Saturday night during a back door entry attempt. Garnett went to make an arrest when the Mexican fired. both men died in the exchange.
Last Thursday July 20 1911 Culver Kartchner celebrated his 44th birthday with a farm home gathering south of town. About twenty friends and relatives attended sharing a noon dinner and refreshments including lemonade oranges ice cream and cake. The day featured games for children and merry wishes for many more returns.
Last Wednesday night another of the triplets died leaving one girl. The remaining infant is bottle fed and struggling in the heat. Mrs Gill, mother of the triplets, receives widespread sympathy for the losses.
Acting Governor Young pardons William Traylor who was sentenced in October 1909 to fourteen years for the killing of Thomas Dallas in Graham county Arizona.
Last Wednesday at noon Winifred Fidler wife of Harry Midler killed herself with a 30-30 Winchester in a tent house behind the bar shop. She dressed to travel to Clifton that afternoon. The coroner’s jury ruled death by self-inflicted gunshot.
The anti-prohibition majority in the statewide election stands at 6,104 with 234,101 votes against the amendment and 227,997 for it, marking a decisive lead against prohibition.
Local racing on the Fourth of July in Silver City drew bets between Jim Parks of Duncan and Jim Wiley of Central. Parks won the first race, netting large cash. funds from Gila banks stayed under watch as a grain sack of winnings traveled home. Second race featured Black Dick who outclassed the Wiley entry, leaving Duncan bettors with cash to spare and even a car needed to move the money.
In Kingman Arizona on July 18 William Bayley, representing United States Smelting, pays 1.6 million dollars for the Gold Road mine, with 1.2 million to shareholders and the rest to liquidate bonds. Prescott stockholders ratify the sale. United States Smelting to take over tomorrow. The mine near Kingman yields about 80 thousand dollars monthly and hosts a top recovery system.
Tom Green, living in Clifton, was struck by lightning last Wednesday between Clifton and Morenci. His horse was killed and Green was badly stunned. a nearby Mexican found him and believed him dead. Green previously lived here.
In San Bernardino on July 21 the Mojave desert shattered a high temperature record with a 140 degree reading at Death Valley salt basin. Described as the most terrific heat spell for any U S location on record.
The Gila Ranch was badly damaged Monday when Riley Canyon broke, flooding the farm house and haystacks about three feet. Supt. Houlihan wired Cedar Rapids for a replacement, though he may reconsider staying on the job.
This office extends thanks to Judge Watters for mighty fine peaches and plums grown here in Duncan. Mr. Watters has used good judgment in selecting his fruit and the flavor is far above the average fruit grown in this valley.
Mr. Altman, an elderly resident living on the Bee ranch over the river, was struck with paralysis last week and removed to the County Hospital at Clifton. He lived alone and, though weakened by prior ailments, was a pitiable spectacle. he was a good worker and had been making a living for the short time he stayed in the area.
J F Cleaveland is elected president of the Union Bank and Trust Company succeeding H B Wilkinson who resigned. Cleaveland previously served as cashier with Luther B Smith taking the cashier role. Cleaveland once private secretary to Governor Richard E Sloan and is described as a capable financier and one of the youngest bank presidents in the southwest.
Del M. Potter locates a dam site on the Gila river near Clifton to reclaim thousands of acres with a large masonry dam. Lamar Cobb and E T Morton begin surveying with seven assistants to layout irrigation ditches and power facilities. project cost nears 3 million dollars and promises wide industrial and farming benefits across the region.
Prof and Mrs Wiggs marked their first wedding anniversary with a July 20 gathering at their Hill Street home. Friends attended for an evening of merriment with music and refreshments including lemonade ice cream and cake. Attendees included Messrs Marshall Harris McCamant Aker Cruckson and Dr Briley and Mesdames McCamant Cruckson Aker Misses Katie Lewis and Catherine McLennan.
G W Collins reports the largest potatoes of the season at the town edge farm and trucking yard. A week earlier Mr Wilson sent a sample but Collins outpaced him. Jasper Gale also brings fine Newark potatoes noting two crops yearly with early and late plantings.
During a Sunday storm on Chase Creek large boulders slid down a 500 foot incline. One smashed the kitchen of Carrie Johnson’s small restaurant, destroying the range and furniture. The next day she moved, stating a warning had been sent. Another rock struck near a two story rooming house but caused no injuries as it bounced away.
Heavy rain caused a washout on the A and N M road just below Duncan delaying the regular passenger train overnight. A repair crew worked through the night and by morning the line was ready for service into Clifton. The Franklin races were postponed due to rain. The town stayed lively with ranch visitors and two nights of dancing at Hobbs Hall.

Lightning struck a tall cottonwood by Mrs Hill’s corner with no major damage. District attorney Horton aided inquest into Mrs Harry B Fidler’s death. Chambers family trip to Wash ington note favorable statehood outlook. Mrs J T Tong to open restaurant business in Lordsburg. Local improvements on Main Street including sidewalk and gutter cleanup. Justice McGrath called to coroner’s inquest and took office duties after bond.
