The Uintah County assessor releases the 1928 final property assessment showing total property values up from 1927 and livestock valuation rising. It notes 22 322 more sheep than last year and wool production with over 225 000 fleeces slated for shipment, much of it from Uintah basin.
A Price chamber meeting reviewed plans to reopen the Price-Myton road with support from the state funding. Officials discussed a likely appropriation for maintenance and potential highway improvements, noting local towns favored the project.
In Jeane county the Republican meeting Saturday chose King delegates to the state Salt Lake convention to be held Friday May 4. Delegates include I. Carl Apion Rulon Larsen and several others. additional nominees were selected to attend the upcoming state and county education conventions with plans to nominate at the Roosevelt senatorial convention.
In a ten day Duchesne district court case Aute loid Shearime Corral company sued Pat Hansen for trespass on lands claimed through leases on South Myton beach. The jury found no cause for action, noting leases were obtained unlawfully or via agents without clear authority, leaving land claims unproven and rights to water holes disputed. Attorneys K G Porter and M B Pope for plaintiffs. Ray E Dillman and A I Morgan for defendants.
Last Friday a Duchesne oil test well reached 3975 feet in lime and shale. The formation caved at 4014 feet prompting a six inch casing and cement shut off. A casing string was lowered from Craig Colorado, cement set in five days, then water at 2400 feet would be pumped out as operations resume.
Governor George S. Dern presents a vivid portrait of Utah highlighting its scenic attractions and industrial growth. The May issue dedicates nine pages to the state, including cover, frontispiece, a double-page photo spread, and four pages showing Union Pacific employees at various Utah locations.
Pioneer company officials announced in Salt Lake last Saturday that the Sugarhouse area near the Wasatch base will host a new studio for four productions this year. The first film titled Exodus follows the Mormon pioneers on their journey with filming planned at Ball Lake studio.
Frank Defa visited on business in Vernal while real estate deals emerged with Charles Bartola and Lavern Wadley as prospective buyers. Adelaide White wed Rudy Lewis in Duchesney. Local farming, school programs, and community events filled the week with church, theater, and streamside gatherings.
Dave Cooper of Leelon visited Saturday. E A Nelson of Hill Creek toured with brother P L Nelson of Short Loft Hotel. Water Master Fenin busy repairing leaks after a Friday Cove outage. Roosevelt transacts business. Virgil Rabi of Farth Creek, James Cryatat of Altonai, and families motor to Vernal for Utopia event. Mrs Earl Moosman of Rowse also noted.
Bids for a 6.02 mile federal aid highway from Roosevelt to Fort Duchesne will be opened by the state road commission on Monday May 7. Chief Engineer H S Kerr notes the project is mainly earthwork with Ward dugway excavation about 70000 cubic yards to create a straight highway replacing the current circuitous route.
Town notes report moves and arrivals including Harry Rasmussen family from Park City and Floyd Farnsworth to town. Several meetings held, a wedding dance for Mr. and Mrs. Gentry, and a ward reorganization with a new bishopric. Also updates on schooling, sacraments, weather and local travel to Salt Lake.
The next regular meeting of the Duchesne Commercial Club will be Tuesday May 8. Several important matters will be discussed and a good attendance is desired. Those outside Duchesne are invited to attend.
The county board of education met at Duchesne with all members present. A committee from Ioka urged a new school building while no action was taken. Bid from J. L. Sweat was accepted. A junior high for district 5 was approved linking Talmage and several towns, with the likely site near Mt. Emmons. A drainage plan was assigned to Superintendent Paxton and President Lockhart. The meeting adjourned to Mt. Emmons for May 15 at 3:30.
Duchesne Junior High showcased student work in decorated rooms and halls while field events attracted many participants. Frank Casper won the marble championship. Lowell Clement led in high jump and mile events. Mabel Mickelson won girls archery. Grace White claimed the Hopscotch title. The May Day Dance by the American Legion Duchesne Post No 33 drew strong attendance and a sizable door take supporting Legion and Auxiliary buildings.
