Forest road project to open Uintah mountains timber area

Ogden Lambert reports completion of bridge work on Taos Stane and Lakefork junction as a new forest road plan advances. Two access routes from Altona and Mt. Home lead toward Little Fish Mile, crossing Indian grazing lands to connect with the forest road. Estimated timber yield: 51 million feet plus three million on grazing lands. funding includes $20,000 from forest department with $12,000 available, seeking Indian department aid to cover section costs.

Railroads eye transcontinental merger plans in West

Duchesne Neola and Arcadia Lead Basin League Standings

Standings show Duchesne and Vernal atop the Basin League after Saturday results. Duchesne beat Vernal 12 to 9, Neola defeated the Indians 4 to 3, Roosevelt edged Arcadia 1 to 0, and Arcadia won 6 to 0 in another noted game. Next Saturday's schedule lists Ft. Duchesne at Roosevelt and Arcadia at Vernal with Neola at Duchesne, though the Duchesne Neola game moved to Sunday.

School Transportation Contracts Set by Board

The board of education met June 5 with all members present. A three year transportation contract was discussed with Salt Lake architect Joseph Monson attending. A Strawberry route change to Duchesne was approved and bids for janitor services will be posted at post offices. Transportation bids from Hancock Cove to Roosevelt and other routes were accepted pending further negotiations.

Pinitland Man Dragged by Runaway Horse

Ernest Sweat suffered a severe accident Saturday while working at the Murdock ranch on Current creek. His horse spooked by a tumble weed dragged him through a slough, nearly strangling him in water before he lost consciousness. He rode home after the horse exhausted itself.

Basen Pioneer Dies in Orem at Age Fifty Two

William M Mott died at his brother J R Mott’s home in Orem after two weeks of illness. A Basen settler near Duchesne, he was age 52 and survived by his widow, three children, two brothers, two sisters, and his mother. Funeral held in Duchesne with burial in Strawbery cemetery.

Long and Useful Life of Gomes to Close

John Ross Wilson, after a long illness, died May 21 at his son Ernest’s home in Duchesne at age eighty nine. A prominent citizen, he endured years of weakness and blindness with little complaint, and remained steadfast in faith while facing death. Born December 16, 1839 in Randolph County Arkansas, he moved to Bates County Missouri, traveled west, settled in Utah, joined the LDS Church, and married Jane Elizabeth Priday in 1874. He later remarried Louisa Evans after his first wife’s death, and spent years in Vernal and Duchesne with his family, leaving four surviving children: Wilford, Ernest, Clarence, and James.

Man Wanted in Colorado Arrested at Roosevelt

Deputy Sheriff Arthur Jacobs and Rio Blanco County Sheriff Gougly arrested C Gilmore, a desperate man traveling from Vernal to Roosevelt. Gilmore confronted near a rooming house, fired at, wounded in the calf, and finally surrendered after a chase to Dry Gulch. He was treated at a hospital before transfer back to Meeker amid bank robbery and auto theft rumors.

Gate-Way Luncheon Hosts Board of Education Guests

The Gate-Way Luncheon Club met at the Grant 16tdl on a Tuesday to discuss road matters and arrange July Fourth celebration plans. Temporary chairman Lowe Ashton led the meeting in President Porter’s absence as Vernal court duties kept him away. A Fourth of July committee was authorized to work with the Commercial Club and American Legion on the events.

Duchesne Vernal Game At Duchesne Sunday

The Duchesne Vernal ball game at Duchesne Sunday was exciting with Vernal scoring two late runs. Carmen pitched strongly for Duchesne and Vernal struggled to catch up as Duchesne built an early lead. Next Sunday plans are to play at Duchesne with state road conditions noted along the route from Green River to Salt Lake City.

The Duchesne county assessor reports a total valuation of 3,463,414 for 1928, down from 5,831,256 in 1927. Sheep numbers and automobile counts fell, and real estate, live stock, and personal property values declined overall with modest increases in other movements.
