Uintah Basin Industrial Convention Opens In Duchesne

The sixth session of the Uintah Basin Industrial convention begins in Duchesne on August 8 at 6:46 a.m. and runs three days. Governor Dern attends, with state officials and university instructors donating services. Fort Douglas Military Band will provide concerts and flag ceremonies, while a packed program features addresses by officials, music, sports, and a big closing dance.

Midwest company closes Vernal office amid drilling restart

The Vernal office of the Midwest Ronning company closed last November and equipment shipped to Gallup New Mexico. District superintendent Charles Sealt left two months ago. a clerk joined the chief last Saturday. Drilling resumes at the Ashley field seven miles northwest of Vernal after a two month cure, with a 1090 foot well and a steel derrick erected. Equipment owned by the Idaho Oil and Refining Company will be used in drilling 118 feet tests.

Vernal Man Killed by Lightning Sunday

Carl Pitt, 26, son of Ephraim and Mrs Pitt of Maeser, was instantly killed by lightning last Sunday afternoon while locating a brake band at a Vernal city dump. He worked for Newton Brothers and died as his parents waited in a car about fifty yards away. Survived by his wife and two children. Texoval services were held in Maeser and burial in Reck Point cemetery.

Ten Utah counties raise livestock taxes via equalization

Utah state board of equalization and assessment met Saturday and approved livestock tax increases totaling about 450000. Weber County leads with cattle raises 15 percent, other cattle 25 percent, and horses 20 percent. Other counties follow with varying percentages for cattle and range livestock.

Victory Highway Route Changes Discussed Near Vernal

Uintah county road engineers and the board of commissioners met to consider possible changes to the Victory highway routing into Vernal. Two tentative routes involve three to fifteen miles of new roads with funding from state aid. no action was taken and a state road commission meeting is planned.

Duchesne Drives Uintah Basin Baseball Season Unbeaten

The Uintah Basin Baseball League closed with Duchesne as the standout team. Coach Duke and Lloyd Pope led a strong squad with solid pitching by Carmen, solid catching by Peterson and Sund, and robust fielding and batting. Duchesne defeated the Indians 9 to 6 in the final game as Case boosted offense with a three base hit with bases loaded.
