Naval Stores Group Recommends Stimulus for Pine Gum
A VALDOSTA meeting of naval stores producers and government officials recommended that selective producers receive payments to experiment with chemical stimulation to boost pine gum flow. The plan, part of the 1947 conservation program, will be sent to Washington with other minor changes. Experts cite the main hurdle as equipment for stimulation, noting only about two percent of producers use the method with reported 50 to 60 percent gains. The industry has a $50,000 federal appropriation for tool mechanization. Research teams from the Southeastern Forest Experiment Station and Lake City FL, with UF engineers, are pursuing improved spray and mechanical gear under supervisor oversight.
