Detroit Oil Strike Sparks Auto Townwide Labor Turmoil
Conflicting reports detail a major oil refinery strike that has prompted depictions of a broad labor clash. About 10,000 workers demonstrated near the Port Motor area, while 6,500 Chevrolet workers faced shutoffs. Several related walkouts ripple through Detroit as tensions mount over wage and cost-cutting measures.

Sift of wartime wage talk and veteran notices
Wartime labor debate resurfaces over 48 hour pay parity with prewar levels as United Automobile Workers clashes with General Motors and Ford. Separate notices honor veterans, including Lt. and Mrs R H Cairns of Harford and George E Harden of Dothan, highlighting service aboard ships in Pacific theaters and transfer details from Great Lakes to Luzon.
Union strike vote timing delays at GM firms
Williams authorized union representatives to petition the National Labor Relations Board for a strike vote. The board must set a date far enough to finance balloting for 350,000 workers across 135 plants, print ballots, recruit staff, and arrange logistics, an estimate of at least 32 days, likely two months before a strike. Chrysler and Ford may require longer. Companies and the UAW mull a public record and possible pay raises, with Studebaker offering 12 cents an hour amid a push for about 20 percent.
