This Is the Place Monument to Honor Brigham Young Visit
Salt Lake City reports a granite and bronze monument slowly rising on a knoll on the eastern rim to mark the spot where Brigham Young first viewed the valley of Great Salt Lake on July 24 1847. The This Is the Place Monument and surrounding state park will be dedicated in September 1947 as Utah’s centennial celebration. Sculptor Mahonri MacIntosh Young grandson of Young designed the piece. The monument sits within a landscaped area taken from Fort Douglas. The project costs about 300000 dollars, funded by the state church and public contributions.
