King Levinsky, once a Chicago fish peddler, defeats Jack Sharkey by unanimous decision at Comiskey Park in front of about 20 000 spectators. Levinsky lands early rights and controls the bout, while Sharkey struggles to answer in the rounds shown, losing his bid to regain the heavyweight crown.
Council President W F Martin again offered an amendment to council salaries to pay all aldermen for every regular and special meeting. The measure was defeated. Debate noted that the plan would allow pay even without attendance. Voting Yes were Grant Botts Martin and Jerkins. No votes came from Lisenby McIntyre Newton Burkett and Bates.

C L Steed imprisoned in Houston County jail for violation of the national prohibition act received a one week leave of absence after his wife was reported seriously ill in a local hospital. Judge C B Kennamer ordered the release upon notice from U S Deputy Marshal J W Daughtry as Steed served 60 days of a six month sentence and had been jailed for alleged probation violation.
Alabama’s Public Works Board has nineteen loan applications totaling 3.2 million dollars for public works projects and employment. Applicants seek 30 percent grant coverage under the Public Works Act with projects spanning Birmingham city hall and storm sewer work to flood protection and school renovations.
By a 5 to 4 vote the city council approved a 25 dollar monthly appropriation to Brille's fever survey in Dothan. Councilman Newton opposed, calling the city unable to fund it, while Mayor Ezell defended the move noting the survey spends around 50 thousand dollars in salaries and provides jobs. The funding will stop after 250 dollars has been spent.
American Legion convenes in Chicago with a four point program to aid disabled veterans. It calls for equitable disability compensation hospitalization and restoration of a 25 percent cut made last March. Immediate payment of the bonus is urged by a minority faction. The Americanism commission will back the anti Communist drive.
Washington reports assert the United States will keep intact its naval building plan in response to Great Britain pressure. The navy plans to seek a 50 percent boost in fighting air strength by Congress, adding 500 planes. Half of the new planes will support the building program, which includes two aircraft carriers and four 10,990 ton cruisers.
City council authorized the engagement of M. L. Strickland of Geneva and L. A. Carroll of Slocomb to audit the city books for the year ending October 1. The pair agreed to perform the audit for 23750 and can begin immediately to complete the work by year end. Carroll is a former internal revenue collector and both men come highly recommended by City Auditor J. L. Vaughn.
City council adjourned last night's session until Thursday night to take up several matters. The license schedule for the next year is to be prepared, with a deadline of October 1.
Five city filling stations report sharp drops in gasoline sales after the September 1 tax increase from one to two cents. Managers say losses range from 25 to 40 percent as both transient and regular customers buy elsewhere, with several noting declines in lubrication services as well.
Johnson City Tennessee authorities report two World War veterans died and a third was gravely ill after drinking poison liquor near the Soldiers Home. Names released as W. A. Townes and Everett H. Cummins. Origin of the liquor unknown. the surviving man unable to provide details.
Oklahoma City AP Herbert K. Hyde says two farm youths Gay Coleman and Carl Wilson positively identified Albert Bates as one of two men who boasted of kidnapping a guy soon. The identification followed a trip to Bates' cell near Stratford Oklahoma where Bates awaited to seize the magnate on July 22.
Mayor J. Fizell, described as general of the NRA army in Houston county, said he would appoint a compliance committee today but withheld members until they accept. Meanwhile the clean up squad interviewed employers, revealing a $16 498 payroll rise in Dothan and 15 more full time and eight part time jobs, totaling 202 employers interviewed.
City council approved higher prices for prison meals, increasing the per meal cost from 15 to 20 cents. Prisoners in the jail receive two meals daily and workers get three meals.
The McCanna family asks authorities to ban parking on a Spring Street hill after five parked cars rolled downhill and crashed into the McCann Printing Company storefront. R. J. McCann told police the incidents show the need for a law to curb parking on that slope.

United States warrants accuse W. W. Newsom and Jamen McNealy of robbing the Ramer post office. Geneva sheriff A J Driver keeps all three men for Geneva county grand jury on receiving and concealing stolen property. A third man Hugh Gantt provided a name. the trio may also be linked to Bainbridge Hancock Lumber Co robbery and Florida warrants.
J. T. Vickers files in circuit court against Barber Bros Construction Co and M. Tatum claiming $500 damages for injuries from being run over by a company truck on the highway. Tatum drove the truck. Menefee Tatum is not involved. Vickers seeks hospital expenses and a jury trial.
Mrs. Tishle Lambert of Dothan Route 2 died after a three week illness. Survived by husband A Yo Lambert, son Ralph Lambert, father W E Pickle of north Alabama, two sisters Mrs L Ochers and Mrs W J Johnson of Dothan. Funeral at Piney Grove church at 10 o'clock Wednesday morning. Dowling Rhodes Funeral Home in charge.
Philadelphia reports bridge engineer Clement E. Chase fell 120 feet to his death from a bridge span he helped design. Sightseers and companions say a gust of wind may have unbalanced him.
A copy of the cotton conference demands for currency inflation and a 20 cent per pound price was left at the White House after Roosevelt postponed a meeting. Dissention arose over a plan to suspend the processing tax with Louisiana and Georgia delegates opposing it.
A circuit court jury awarded Cain $500 for injuries from an automobile wreck near Malvern. Alva Lewie, driver of Cain’s car, faced negligence claims. Defense argued a frame up and conspiracy absolving liability. The jury returned the verdict shortly before noon after deliberating since 5:30 yesterday afternoon.
