Japanese leadership changes include Shigemitsu replaced by Shigeru Yoshida who was jailed earlier for peace stance. A Chinese dispatch alleges Japanese forces violated surrender terms in several instances. General Wainwright advocates occupying Japan for about ten years and depriving Japan of industry during that period. Allied information disemmination efforts to educate Japan and curb militarism proceed.
President Truman announced that Japanese forces are being withdrawn from Korea and that a great nation is being built there. The United States, China, Great Britain, and the Soviet Union are assisting Korea, with several leaders retained temporarily for technical reasons.
In Birmingham a dispute over the cost of an automobile ride from Tuscaloosa to Birmingham led to a confrontation. ABI Reed Pits, 32, of Tuscaloosa, was wounded by a bullet. C Emerson, also of Tuscaloosa, was held on an assault with intent to murder following the argument. Detective H C Abbot reported the incident and the supply of a ten dollar charger for the trip.
Complete returns show Mayor El P. Marlin leading Florence with a plurality but not a majority. Marlin has 9,600 votes, W. Aimus Jones 4,900 and Fred Muore 470. A runoff is scheduled for next Monday.
