Legion picks Clarkburg man as commander amid repeal vote

In Oregon at the American Legion convention a Virginia delegate Laula A. John of Clarksburg was named fellowal commander. The group voted 1 167 to 109 for immediate veteran bonus payment and 1 144 to 133 for repeal of the eighteenth amendment. The decisions were met with shouts and disorder as delegates debated.

Invaders Routed in Mine Section Near Braidwood

On Sept 16 three miners were wounded as state police and Chield Walter Moody confronted union pickets from Peoria and Springfield districts. The encampment planned protests against a $5 daily wage but began to disperse and said they would go home under escort. Mines to reopen tomorrow.

Attendance Awards Given To 45 Highland Pupils

Forty five Highland elementary students received perfect attendance certificates at Thursday chapel. After a talk by Mrs. C. L. Collins, the awards were presented by principal Mrs. E. Folkes. Names include Nell Harris, George Harris, James Earl Gwaltney Jr., Barbara Georgie May, and others. the final certificate went to Mary Lydia Reese from a Birmingham school.

Sheriff Joe Rollins escorted Lamar Hollins, a former convict, from Montgomery to face charges of stealing a car from Jim Cobb. Hollins allegedly tried to sell the vehicle at a police station before his arrest.

Tampa Bay Bottom Acreage Leased to Malone Gillespie

Approximately 18000 acres of bottom lands to Tampa Bay and Clearwater Bay were leased today by trustees of the State International Improvement fund to the Malone Gillespie company of Tampa. The company said it proposed to prospect for oil.

Miller urges Alabama lawmakers to cut expenses now

Governor B M Miller blasted fiscal waste before the legislature in Montgomery calling for deep cuts starting at home. He urged reducing clerks from 256 to 56 and urged a salary roll back along with passage of the Fletcher omnibus bill and an income tax proposal in November.

Councilman Miller Stricken After Appendicitis Operation

Miles Miller councilman of Ward three was reported improved at a Dothan hospital after an appendicitis operation. The Bay Line railroad engineer fell ill on his return from a Panama City run and was rushed to a hospital. His illness will prevent attendance at the last 1928 1932 council meeting next Monday night.

Lieut Wise Takes Off for Birmingham Visit

Lieut Walter Wise a National Guard aviator based in Birmingham flew here yesterday to visit his parents and returned to Birmingham today, taking off after noon. He was accompanied by Bob Bagley of the Birmingham squadron. Dothan aviator B W Armstrong Jr was flown to Dothan from Montgomery in a Maxwell Field plane yesterday afternoon to visit his mother, Mrs B W Armstrong Sr, after which the plane returned to Montgomery.

Sears Roebuck Sales Fall in Ninth Period

Sears Roebuck and Company reports sales for the ninth period August 15 to September 10 totaling 19,145,291 dollars, down 21.6 percent from 24,431,663 dollars last year. Year-to-date sales for January 2 to September 19 sum to 181,991,521 dollars versus 232,908,349 last year, a 21.9 percent decline.

County Slashes Gasoline Costs With 10000 Gallon Tank

The county reports savings of about 366 dollars per month on fuel since installing a 10 000 gallon storage tank in early summer. County road superintendent C C McEachin says purchases averaged 7.86 dollars per hundred gallons after the outlay of 709 91 dollars for the tank. All county tractors and road machines are serviced from the tank with extra supplies hauled daily to active work sites.

Man Who Led First A E F Prisoner Capture Dies

University of Alabama alumnus War ner T. Hall died in Lawrence Kansas from a heart attack. He commanded the patrol that captured the first German prisoners for the American Expeditionary Force during World War I. Hall earned the Croix de Guerre and the Distinguished Service Cross. He later taught vocational education at the University of Alabama and Tuscaloosa High School before joining Haskell Institute. He is survived by his widow and daughter Jeanette. Funeral services were held in Birmingham with interment at Elmwood Cemetery.

Quadruple Footed Chicken Hatches on Dothan Farm

A chicken hatched on R L Arnold farm in Dothan route one reportedly had four feet and four wings. Early Arnold brought the odd chick to The Eagle office saying he would preserve it. The hen may have killed it after its birth, unwilling to accept the unusual chick.

Greater Cotton Exports Swell Total in August

The Department of Commerce reports August exports rose by over 2 million dollars from July, while imports increased by 11.5 million. U S merchandise exported valued at 109 million dollars and imports at 91 million. The export rise is led by cotton totaling 18 million dollars.

Penny Cans Again In Stores Here

Penny cans will be placed in Do than stores Saturday officials of the Child Welfare Department announced. About 60 were left in stores last winter aiding many children who otherwise would not have survived. About 50 cans are ready to be placed, with many requested by merchants. The green painted cans were taken up last spring by welfare board members.

Noted Architect Dies in Sarasota

Sarasota September 15 AP Death of Alex Browning 68 noted architect removes one of the last survivors of a Scotland to Sarasota colony that began in 1886. He designed numerous prominent buildings in the United States and Canada including the Julia Rosenwald home in Chicago and during World War I he was employed by the Canadian government to design munition plants.

Father Returns Escaped Prisoner Eli Green to Authorities

Eli Green, a Dothan man charged with stealing an automobile, escaped from county jail after sawing bars and slipping past two guards. His father Will Green turned him in hours later, restoring custody at the jail after a seven hour escape, marking a third jail break in two weeks.

Husband of Lost Wife Kills Self

Charles DuBois of Tuckahoe New York a jeweler killed himself in his home bathroom during the search for Edith DuBois his missing wife since August 10. He died after surgery in a Quincy hospital where doctors failed to revive him for a statement. National Guardsmen were in the woods around the summer home during the fatal act.

Mob harms Black suspect after jail escape attempt in Ark

Hymn Writer Charles Gabriel Dies in Los Angeles

Charles H. Gabriel, a prolific hymn composer credited with more than 8,000 hymns and revival songs for Billy Sunday, died at 76 in Los Angeles. Born in Wilton Iowa, he began writing hymns early and produced classics such as Since Jesus Came Into My Heart and There Is A Glory In My Sons.
