In Terre Haute Indiana the death toll from the head on crash of two trains rose to 29 with the hospital death of Sergeant Edward C Gillan of Dix Illinois at 1 am The other sergeants name was withheld pending next of kin notification The wreck involved the Dixie Flyer and the Dixie Mail Express and 13 airmen remain hospitalized two in serious condition
Dijon, France, Sept 4. Delayed AP report says five hundred Maquis and two American paratroopers captured the industrial city, though earlier announcements credited French armor. Capt William H Pietsch from Peach Lake, NY, and Master Sgt. Robert Baird of West New York, NJ, led the assault after a two week drop with a French captain and armed forces unit supporting 38 Maquis on September 3.
Seven guests of the Alabama Hotel were unaccounted for after an early morning fire destroyed the $410,000 structure. Mayor J F King reported missing guests while inspection of rooming houses began. No bodies found as the site remained too hot for search. Hotel lessee William Faw said about 200 guests registered last night. three injured were treated in a local hospital.
One person injured in a truck automobile collision on Echo Grimes road in Date County two miles north of Wiggins Church. Mrs Maude Holmes ofHeadland suffered chest injuries and facial and leg lacerations after her car swerved into oncoming traffic and hit a truck driven by Levy Espy Brown of Skipperville. Holmes was taken to Headland then to a Dothan hospital for treatment.
Eight defendants in the Southern Division of the Middle District of Alabama were indicted this week by the Federal Grand Jury at Montgomery. All eight are at liberty under bond. two others remain at large. Indictments include violations of the Internal Revenue Act, theft of U S property, and violations of maximum price ceiling laws.
Fifth Army troops press north of Lucca towering over Monte Catino and Ponte Di Moriano near the Arno line as Canadian forces reach near Rimini airfield after crossing the Marano River. Eighth Army clears Corian San Savino ridge with heavy losses to Germans. Pietra Buona and northern Pistoia gains noted.
A 30 firm survey aims to study making Dothan a central airline hub in the region to improve travel and freight facilities. A 1943 Dothan traffic crash involving an Army truck killed 11 year old Emile Long. Rep George Andrews and Senator Lister Mill introduced a bill to pay the boy’s father Linden A Long $10,000. The truck was driven by Private Charles L Carson of Camp Rucker. The accident occurred near Lena Street and the boy died after hospital care.
A West Indian hurricane swept from North Carolina to Massachusetts then out to sea off Southern Maine injuring many and causing vast damage. Eleven deaths were reported with winds 60 to 100 mph, severing lines, destroying buildings, and leaving thousands homeless amid disrupted traffic and power outages.
