Balance Of Battle In Mediterranean Swings To Allies

Allied forces pressed along the Salerno Naples corridor as German resistance stiffened north of Salerno. American and British units advanced from beachheads while air forces struck convoys and rail routes. Taranto fell to British control and a small Allied force landed on Ventotene. German claims of Italian capitulation were contested by ongoing fighting. The Allies edged toward Cantanzaro, while German and Italian turmoil increased across northern and central Italy amid heavy bombing and shifting fronts.
