Richard Reese, an 18 year old Monotype operator at Eagle's Composing Room, suffered severe eye burns when a Monotype machine emitted a blast of 750 degree metal after a part slipped. Initial concern was eye damage, but examinations showed only a small amount of metal near the eye and no lasting vision loss. Reese is the son of S. H. Reese and has been operating the machine for several months.
