MONTGOMERY AP State Relations Director Frank Broadway declared that employment of underage workers in industry is prohibited. Employers were urged to prohibit child labor for boys and girls under 16 and only allow those aged 15 to work outside school hours with limits before and after school and on Saturdays.
During wartime manpower shortages the Child Labor Unit of the Department advised employers to grant tolerances in applying the Alabama child labor law. As conversion periods begin, officials say school age children may be employed when necessary to support the war effort.
