California clinic offers conditioned reflex treatment for alcoholism
Dr. Lawrence Kolb of the California state department of mental hygiene describes a conditioned reflex approach tested at Hendocingo hospital. Since starting five months ago, 83 patients have been treated and released on leave, with six returning after relapsing. The process aims to build revulsion to liquor by making drinking sick and unpleasurable, followed by reconditioning and therapy. Patients are voluntary and monitored by social workers after release to track progress and relapse.
