Rail schedule lowers cotton shipping rate in Alabama
The Alabama Public Service Commission approved Southern Railway’s petition to set a low interstate cotton shipping rate. The new schedule affects about 25 mills in Huntsville Florence and Decatur with rates of four and a quarter cents per bale per mile for 5 to 80 mile trips and one cent per mile for up to 200 miles. The move signals a railroad competition against trucking in state commerce.
