Forest Fire Loss Low Despite Big Drought
US forest fires through September 11 show far less damage than last year despite drought hazards. There have been 7,450 fires burning 181,889 acres, 81 percent less than 978,107 acres burned in 1929. Fighting costs total $1,011,120, down over 62 percent from last year. 1929 calendar year costs were about $3,000,000. The average fire this year is 24.4 acres versus 131 acres in 1929.

Four Conference Teams Without Captains This Fall
In Chicago AP report four of the 10 Western conference teams enter the season without captains. Ohio State and Minnesota have abolished captain elections, while Dilnoia State and another school failed to name a gridirion leader. Two others using coach designation face ineligibility. Ohio first adopted naming captains by the coach before each game, Minnesota following, and Dikinola plans to use the scheme this year.

Bank Cashier Slugged in Dallas Bank Robbery
In Dallas on October 20, bandits halted near Austin and Commerce Streets and robbed Union Terminals cash courier B. W. Moore and guard C. H. Murray of roughly 16 000 to 17 000 dollars. Moore was hospitalized in serious condition. Murray was stunned. The robbers fled in a waiting car after grabbing the satchel.
