A hole in the chimney is believed to have started a fire that destroyed Mrs. M. C. Howards eight room house north of Headland yesterday afternoon. Neighbors helped move furniture from the burning dwelling. The building carried a $900 policy while the furniture was not insured.
No arrests were made against alleged violators of the Sunday blue laws in Dothan yesterday as stores closed without protest. Police Chief J L Domingus said offenders not apprehended will be given another chance to close next Sunday or charges will be filed.
Alabama leaders debate, arguing that ratifying two amendments will avert another tax-heavy extra session. They criticize income tax and bond amendments as political cover, warn of a 1933 session to push the governor’s tax plan, and discuss replacing the ad valorem with a constitutional income tax and limits on legislative taxing power.
The funeral for 74 year old John William Lashley of Keyton was held at Pleasant Hills church on Cottonwood road at 10 a m after a brief illness. He is survived by his wife three sons J F L Lashley J E Lashley all of Kevton three daughters and one brother. The Rev Sam Spivey officiated and burial followed in the church cemetery with Fellows and Forrester in charge.
More than ten people registered to vote as general election registration opened this morning. The board of registrars will keep the books open for five days to accommodate new applicants and update records.
Ashford Mrs. Harrison and Miss Sinquefield entertained a group with fall flower settings and five bridge tables. The following guests shared a galadin plate: Mrs Gamble, Mrs Preston, Mrs Strong, Mrs Martin, Mrs Johnson, Mrs Cook, Mrs Bruner, Mrs Leverett, Mrs McArthur and others. A second hostess, Mrs McArthur, held a card club gathering with dahlias and four bridge tables, followed by a salad plate. Additional events include Mrs Cody Reeves honored with a bridge party in MeridIan, and a meeting of the 17 DC with officers announced and delegates named for the November Steaphis convention.
Mrs Willams served afternoon refreshments for guests including Mrs Caleb Bates and Mrs F G Granger at a W M S meeting held Monday at Bates home. The program featured a study of Trying Issues in China with Mrs W H Herrington leading and papers by Mrs John Sellers and Mr Silas Sellers. A chicken dinner plan was made to benefit the pastor’s salary.
Columbia forfeits the game after Antley, a six foot eight and a half inch end, leaped three feet to catch a forward pass and score. Newville led 7 to 0 in the first quarter after intercepting a pass near mid field and Blackwell gained 30 yards for Columbia later.
In the opening quarter Newville led by a point after a failed extra point. A second quarter punt duel kept the ball midfield. A third quarter trick play produced another Newville TD as an interception halted Columbia drive. Blackwell and McGriff connected for a fourth quarter TD to extend the visitors’ lead. Columbia faces Cuthbert next Friday after a 13 to 12 season opener win.
Dothan Commandery No. 25 will hold its regular meeting tonight at the Masonic temple. Officials said routine business matters will be transacted.
