Government Returns Mines To Operators In Coal Standoff
Interior Secretary Ickes restored control of the nation’s coal mines to private operators as President Roosevelt ordered the end of the government take over. The move frees 1,700 mines and sets the stage for a contract with the United Mine Workers to boost winter production while the War Labor Board weighs pending deals for all western coal. The union must convince the board that underground travel time pay won’t trigger a general wage rise, a concern that kept a prior agreement from approval.
