Washington reports circulated on October 12 that inflationists expect a coming monetary statement from the President signaling a possible devaluation of the dollar to 60 cents. bankers and officials debate gold policy while Britain France and the U S discuss currency stabilization amid partisan opposition and rising speculation.
J J Nowell Jr 51 of Headland route five is killed when his car strikes a bridge rail near Blountstown Florida and plunges into a creek. He suffered a fractured skull and pelvic injury from a bridge railing fragment. The crash killed him instantly. investigators led by County Justice W T Chafin concluded cause undetermined. Survived by a large family and a Bethlem school trustee with 12 years road supervision. Funeral set for Piney Grove at 10:20 am with Rev Etheridge officiating.
Wage deadlocks in iron, steel, silk, and cotton mar the industrial picture as mediators seek settlements. A picket march gathered at Carnegie Steel Mills in Clairton Pennsylvania urging steel workers to seek union recognition. Police in Weirton West Virginia used tear gas to disperse a crowd after stones were thrown at the Weirton steel plant. Mrs Gifford Pinchot urged steel trust officials to blame for unrest in Apollo Pennsylvania. In California five ranches were arrested over cotton picker strike troubles in which three were killed.
George Kelly and wife Katheryn Kelly received life terms after a federal jury found them guilty under the Lindbergh Law in the Urschel kidnaping case. Judge Edgar Vaughn ordered the sentences as other co-defendants face life terms. Federal agents planned to move Kelly to Atlanta by plane.
Captain Jack Key of the Salvation Army addressed the Kiwanis club at Wadlington hotel detailing six months of local unit work and reporting on the Kiwanian Underprivileged Child committee. Other speakers included Dr. N. R. Baker and T. W. Smith, John H. Lane, Merrill Harris, and Mrs C Brannon with accordion numbers.
A dispute between Auburn delegates and Houston county officials over the selection of Dr. A R Gissendanner as Farm Demonstration Agent centers on government salary rules. A farmers meeting is set for Monday at the courthouse with Dr L N Duncan of Auburn speaking to discuss the appointment and its impact on local agriculture.
In Washington on October 12 three Erie railroad employees were blamed for the September 5 wreck at Binghamton New York. Primary responsibility fell on Engineer King whose train rear ended another, causing 14 deaths and 32 injuries.
Sheriff Joe Rollins leaves this afternoon for Mobile to join the second annual convention of Alabama sheriffs and peace officers. He serves as vice president and is elected to the executive committee representing the third congressional district.
New York AP report notes three of four voters back repeal but only 19 states would allow legal drinking under various post repeal laws. States draft control schemes with local options or statewide regulation, while 29 states would remain dry due to prohibitions or statutes. Alabama Alabama voters backed national repeal but kept prohibitions. Arizona repealed prohibition. legislature enacts control ban on saloons. Arkansas voted for repeal but remains dry under existing laws. California would shift to liquor control with beer rules intact. Colorado repeals all liquor laws but bars on premises drinking. commission studies control. Connecticut mixes present beer control with possible hard liquor regulation. Delaware enforces via one-man commission. saloons barred with limited hours. Florida has limited wet counties though repeal would legalize liquor in all counties. dates forthcoming. Georgia plans no action until 1935 session. Idaho previously banned sale but now supports national repeal. beer legalized and state control setup under way.
Former Pike County Agent Rufus L. King urges soil restoration in Houston County by growing and turning under Winter and Summer legume crops and maintaining terraces. He notes soil remains underutilized, but legume use can build nitrogen and restore profitability, with Austrian Winter Peas and Hairy Vetch as top choices and cautions against grazing legume crops before turning them into soil.
National Guard units patrolled Sullivan Indiana after three blasts shook the city. Troops stopped cars entering Sullivan seeking clues to origin as Sullivan County had been placed under military control earlier following clashes at cooperative mines.
Jr. G. B. Watson aged 77, longtime Beat 14 Justice of Peace, died at his home after a two week illness. Survived by widow Annie Watson, two sons C. F. Watson of Dawson and G. R. Watson of Ashford, four daughters, and funeral set for Bluff Spring church with Rev. J. R. Cheshire and Rev. G. W. Off officiating. pallbearers listed.
The American Federation of Labor convention voiced opposition to unrestrained inflation of currency. Delegates representing three alice workers approved the committee report warning against direct inflation. The convention instructed the executive council to use every practicable means to prevent restrained inflation.
Ali Dothan plumbers who plan to work in the city next year will take examinations before the Municipal Board of Plumbing Examiners in the council chamber at 2 p m tomorrow. City clerk L P Scarborough announced. Plumbers must show competency to receive cards to do plumbing work under a recent council ordinance.
The 64 014 dollar batch goes to 774 farmers, bringing total payments to 151 521 in the county amid a 237 000 project total. Checks were mailed to growers who signed contracts to plow under cotton, with letters and office pickup at the courthouse for distribution.
Montgomery Oct 12 AP reports former Governor Bibb Graves filed a declaration with the secretary of state to enter the governor race in the May primaries next year.
