Grand Jury to Lift Evidence In Fatal Shooting

Augusta Williams waived first degree manslaughter in a preliminary trial, claiming the fatal shooting of his brother was accidental as the victim stepped into the gun range during a separate incident. Albert Grubb was convicted of assault with a weapon and fined $25. Wallace McRae jailed six months for violating prohibition. Bell Walker received three months for petty larceny.

Bay County in Panama City Florida reports Louis C. Cole of Glenview Illinois purchased a large tract north of the city to establish a farm colony. The Bay Head Inn will serve as headquarters with many colonists already arriving and more to come. Cole previously operated a similar project in Glenview Illinois for 30 years.

Bud Overby a Gainesville cigar salesman told officers he was robbed of about 500 dollars by two masked men on a highway 14 miles east of Tallahassee. The thieves forced him to stop, took the money, then returned six dollars and left the car keys on a bridge.

Audit Work on City Books Is Underway

An audit of the city's books for the fiscal year ending Oct. 3 has started under F H Perry. Officials expect completion in about three weeks. Perry was hired by the council at a cost of at least 20 dollars and will provide the city with extracts.

House Overrides Governor Veto On Beer Measure

In Montgomery on October 6 the Alabama House voted 64 to 30 to override Governor Miller's veto of the Edgar near-beer bill. The measure, sent to the Senate, would limit prohibition enforcement, according to the governor's message read on the floor.

Penny Club attracts volunteers for child welfare drive

Burglars Remove Safe From Office to Obtain Money

Burglars entered two buildings in the city’s northeast last night or early today, stealing money pistols and a safe. The Sinclair Refining Co. office on Range street was burglarized and $35 in small change taken from its safe. a safe at the J. M. Dozier store also looted, with a dollar in pennies and two pistols reported missing. Authorities, including city police and county sheriffs, sought the culprits, noting the refinery safe was found damaged with lock and handle removed.

South sets year record in number of contracts

In October 1932 the South awarded contracts totaling 47.5 million dollars and expects bids of 165.98 million more. September contracts reached a yearly high of 54.56 million, with nine months’ total surpassing 302 million. Farmers Milk Plant Wrecked by Two Bombs

Five men invaded the Burlington Cooperative Mill milk receiving plant kidnapping the watchman John Elsenbart 55 and wrecking the building with two bombs. Elsenbart who was unhurt said he was released after a mile drive from the city and returned to find firemen seeking a body among the debris. The plant opened in September to supply milk to Chicago through a cooperative effort to cut out the middleman profits.

20 to 100 Percent Appropriations Cuts Reported

Montgomery reports the joint appropriations committee tentatively set departmental cuts from 29 to 100 percent. Debts to Confederate veterans from the general fund are not paid. Education retains only a 2 million dollar fund plus a three mill tax, with total education revenue around 5.25 million versus 11 million before. Pensions would run on one mill from the old soldiers tax. The plan assumes over 6 million in revenue.

City Warrants Accepted At Bank In Dothan

City warrants maturing in 82 and 113 days will be accepted at Dothan Bank & Trust Co. The city plans to borrow 7300 from M. L. Hanahan to absorb maturing warrants December 20 and January 20, and to avoid discounts for employees. Warrants about 9000 dollars due in 82 and 113 days and total warrants of about 14000 dollars issued for back pay were announced by City Clerk J P Scarborough.

Bill to borrow for teachers pay ruled unconstitutional

The Supreme Court notified the Senate that the Tunstall bill to borrow $6,000 from the Reconstruction Finance Corporation to pay school teachers is unconstitutional. The plan called for four installments of $1,250,000 each and advanced through the Senate after passage in the house, but was halted in committee.
