Erie Railroad seeks rate hike to curb business slump
Charles E. Denney, president of the Erie railroad, told the Interstate Commerce Commission that rail executives have asked for freight rate increases after careful study. The carriers seek about 170 million dollars in rate raises on hundreds of commodities and class rates nationwide. Denney warned that even with a hoped for government boost, traffic cannot rise quickly enough to prevent a continued decline in gross revenue for 1934 versus 1933, and that railroad rates can no longer stay stationary as other prices rise.

Purchase Auto Tag Now Officials Advise
Reflecting improved business conditions, Houston county tag sales today exceed last year’s for the same period as more motorists buy tags since Monday. County inspector Joe Deck Sanders warned motorists delaying purchase for a $5 tag to quit hoping for a reduction and buy now. He said the state department has announced no reduction ahead and cited enforcement after November 14 for cars without a 1935 tag, noting the legislature won’t meet until January.
