Residents report East Main Street improvements making the avenue more pleasant and safer. City work, including paving and sidewalks, raised property values by about 25 to 35 percent with some locations higher, especially near the cemetery and eastern districts, according to observers from Enterprise.
The Campbell Institute of Accounting and Shorthand opened today in the Cherry building third floor. Miss Louise Florence leads the English department, Miss Jonnie MacLeary supervises shorthand, and Prof Campbell directs the commercial and office studies. Night classes start at 7 30 P M on Monday Wednesday and Friday. Court Stenographer Joseph Boyd of Troy passed through en route to Geneva. For rent the Hannon home on North Lena street. State Senator Max Hamburger aged 35 was found dead at the Cawthon Hotel in Mobile on Sunday afternoon. Apo plexy from exposure was listed as the cause. Hamburger was known statewide as a newspaper man and antiamendment figure, former Mobile Daily Herald owner and editor, with early work for the Mobile Item at Whistler.
Early this morning at 3 30 the fire department fought a blaze in the northwestern town area known as Baptist Bottom. A negro residence and a store were destroyed as sparks spread to a nearby shop, with removal of priceless book cases from the Nix Drug Company cream parlor. Firefighters limited damage, property listed as HQ Frazier. Hunter Innis lived in study rooms, and Malone Furniture Co offered the for sale display.
The Bay Line road relocates its officers to a new neat depot at East Main street crossing. A commodious facility now handles passengers and freight with convenient office space for the force. Grading and sidewalk work on East Main shortens travel to the line.
The Criterion will present a special 11 o'clock show for Camp Bartow members to view the film The Road to Richmond. Old soldiers from Camp Bartow will march to the courthouse, then the picture will be shown for the benefit with an afternoon and night showing for the public later.
A local retailer extends a one week sale from September 24 with emphasized honesty and top quality goods direct from mills and manufacturers. The ad claims no customer complaints and promises continued “unreasonable prices” to raise quick money, with a plan to close October 8 and revert to former prices.
