Livestock numbers move through Georgia markets

In Thomasville and Montgomery, federal livestock data show arrivals totaling about 950 cattle 450 calves and 1600 hogs at eight plants across Georgia Alabama and Florida. Hog prices rise about 50 cents with steady to higher near 26 for heavy hogs and 21 to 24 for lighter weights. Cattle trade remains fairly active with steady to higher quotes for steers and heifers and mixed calf prices across regions.

Mrs S B Harper was elected president of the Dupree Community Farm Bureau succeeding the resigning S B Harper. At last night’s meeting at the school building vice president Leo Pynes presided until a new president could be elected. Allen Waller named secretary treasurer. Clark Rudder showed a film on mechanized cotton farming and Mrs Allen Waller directed games and group.

Traffic plan for stadium exit on Sixth Avenue

Traffic will use Trirg Avenue and Sixth Avenue for exits while fans are urged to depart quickly. Drivers heading to the stadium should avoid lingering and exit via Third Street to Sixth Avenue to ease congestion. Highway Patrol and local police will direct traffic. officials expect smooth flow if drivers cooperate as in the past.

Peanut Festival Parade Preparations Near Finish

Festival chairman announced at noon today that most festival events are ready for rehearsals, with about 18 floats completed and plans for parade routes possibly altered. A projected crowd of 10 000 or more is expected across Friday and Saturday with shops closing 10 to 7 to view the mighty spectacle.

Health officials disclosed a new diphtheria case in the county. A seven year old Negro child from Do Than is the reported patient, according to the county health department and local physician.

Howard E Smith 12 Dies At Cottonwood

Howard Fort Smith Smith a 12 year old boy died at his home in Cottonwood after a long illness. Funeral services were held at Madrid Baptist Church with Rev Ramsey Judah of Ozark officiating. Burial followed in Madrid cemetery with Ward Wilson in charge. Survived by parents Mr and Mrs W A Smith two sisters Nina Jo and Beatrice of Cavonwood and grandfather Berry Smith of Blountstown Florida. Government voluntary ration plan eyed to curb grain waste

Medics Postpone October Meeting

The Houston County Medical Society postponed its October meeting announced by President Dr Thomas B Woods. The cancellation allows members to attend the football game at Wiregrass Memorial Stadium and other peanut festival activities. The next meeting is set for the first Friday night in November.

Stray Spitz Dies From Rabies Infection In Alabama

A stray white Spitz dog died of rabies after laboratory analysis at the Dothan Branch lab. The dog, brought by R J Clark of Dothan route five Hartford highway, showed abnormal behavior before dying on Wednesday. Clark said the animal had no owner or vaccination tag.

Crawford 65 Dies Near Hartford in Alabama

Funeral services for B A Crawford sixty five who died at his Hartford route two home after a brief illness were held at Union Church with Reverends Givens and White officiating. Interment was at the church cemetery Ward Wilson directing. He lived in the community forty four years and is survived by daughters Mrs Hewland Tew and Mrs W J Hadland five sons including B R Crawford J N Ve RK and J C Crawford T W Crawford and Jack Crawford two brothers and two sisters and ten grandchildren. Exchange Club Hears Dial Phone Discussion

The Exchange Club discussed proposed dial telephone systems for Pothan during the weekly meeting at the Houston Plated. Delegates Ray McGaul BOW Davis and others attended from the Natural Exchange Convention in Cincinnati. The session included a report on the convention and a safety note citing national accident costs estimated at 2.2 billion dollars for the year ending July 1947.

Daylong Dam Celebration Honors Builders and Backers
