Old Vesuvius Erupts Quietly Into Fire and Lava

Naples observers watched as Vesuvius, now transformed into a fountain of fire, hurled lava 300 feet high from two molten streams. The crater shifted 60 feet but authorities said no lava danger to nearby residents. The volcano has been semi-active since early summer with a large lava flow in mid-July.

Women Get Jobs Cleveland Study Finds Economic Need

A 550-mother study in Cleveland shows most wage earning mothers work due to economic necessity rather than choice. Among those with husbands at home, 187 report insufficient income as the reason, while 34 cite personal preference. Families averaged 2.3 children and many mothers held domestic, factory, store, or office jobs, with half doing laundry themselves and 99 using nursery care while 188 had no caregiver.
