Marines Recall Helena Battle And Heroism

Private First Class Ols Woodham, 21, among Helena survivors, recounted leaping into oily black water after the cruiser Helena sank on July 6. He helped deploy rafts, swam for an hour, and was rescued days later after evading Japanese shells. Major Bernard T. Kelly praised the Marines' courage and humor. Woodham, from Ashford High School, had enlisted in March 1941.

Army promotes Byron Fay Fain to second lieutenant

Byron Fay Fain of Headland has been commissioned as second lieutenant in the U S Army after completing the Officer Candidate Course at Fort Benning Georgia. Inducted June 11 1943 he previously held corporal. A graduate of Gracial Military Academy College Park Ga he captained a drill team and was a cadet leader.

Two Flyers Graduate at Blytheville Army Air Field

Two Wiretrisa men were graduated with commissions as second lieutenants at Blytheville Army Air Field. Lieut A G T Benefield, 22, son of Mr and Mrs T Nenefield of Ozark, and Tront Tam Trace Fellows, 22, son of Mr and Mrs A T Fellows of Ashford, were among the new pilots for twin engine bombers. Benefield is a 1930 graduate of Tinle County High. Fellows, from Ashford High School in 1938. Netlye Tand of Ashford is noted in the report.

Blakely Officer Killed Overseas

Second Lieutenant Dan Bleck of Blakely Georgia, a twenty three year old bombardier who earned his wings in March, was reported killed in an accident in the European war zone. A War Department telegram said he was killed on September 11. He was a Blakely High School graduate and the son of Mrs. C. C. Black of Blakely.

Five More Joins Guard Company in Alabama State Guard

Five new members join Dolan Headquarters and Supply Company of the Alabama State Guard, leaving two vacancies. Lt Alto V. Lee, the company commander, announced Tuesday. New members: James A. Dees, Woody Williams, J. N. Morris Jr, J. T. Brock Jr, and Wallace Scarbreigh. The unit has standard issue equipment including shotguns and Thompson submachine guns, with gas masks and ammunition. Members absent from Camp at Dauphin Island will receive chemical warfare training, and the company will soon rifle-range. Meetings are Mondays at the Armory on the Montogomery Highway. those wishing to join should act now.

Webb Soldier Recovers Jap Billfold On Birthday Front

Private First Class Don Whitten of Webb route one reports from the Pacific front that he survived combat on his birthday and, as a souvenir, sent home a green billfold taken from a Japanese soldier. Inside are inked characters likely naming the owner. Whitten, in the service about two years, has been in the Pacific war zone for four months. He has eight brothers, including Private Jake Whitten in the Medical Corps in North Africa.
