Dothan Mayor Smack Incident Roots in Local History
A recollection of the 1885 Christmas Eve clash in Dothan when Mayor Connelly was struck by Taylor and the marshal’s arm was broken. The episode helped shape local politics as a recurring tradition of public figures fighting, fines and a history of rugged, informal justice. The piece links this event to later political skirmishes and notes Connelly’s resignation and move to Texas. Also briefly mentions a Boston digression about Cambridge manufacturers making fastenings from lobster and crab parts.
