Humble Ancestor of City Firemen Buckets in Dothan
The Dothan city fire department traces its roots to 1906 when volunteers used buckets to stop fires. E R Porter became chief with assistants F E Call and C E McCoats among others. They hauled hoses by hand and later urged council to buy a fire wagon and horses. Initial attempts with a city horse caused a stalled wagon at a blaze, prompting purchase of two regular fire horses, Gomez and Jim, who served for years. Chief Porter recalls the fun of volunteering despite no pay.
