Perfect Plans for Extending Railroad Here

A transaction application to acquire the Alabama Florida and Gulf line for a Marianna and Blountstown extension to Dothan and Marianna was filed with the Interstate Commerce Commission. Communities along the route pledge up to 50 000 in preferrer stock, with the new line to cost 100 000 to 150 000 and a 50 000 seed from the parent company. A planning meeting set for Monday will organize subscriptions and a committee will coordinate stock plans for Dothan and neighboring towns.

Southern Baptists Aim to Raise 40 Million

Knoxville reports Southern Baptists will raise about 40 million dollars to fund local church enterprises and missionary, educational, and benevolent work for 1982. Dr. F Brown, pastor of First Baptist, says the campaign spans many states and aims to enlist all 2,850,278 members through 18 states, 910 associations, and 3051 churches during the November 2 to December 4 period.

Five Sentenced to Penitentiary In Local Court Confluence

J B Peacock convicted in circuit court this week on grand larceny was sentenced today to from two to five years in the penitentiary. E English pled guilty to transporting liquor and drew one to two years. Vaan Cureton received the same one to two year term after admitting guilt in a forging charge. William A Goodfriend and Minnie Dehaney also pleaded guilty to transporting liquor and were sentenced to one to two years. Clyde Chapman planned to plead guilty at February term. case passed pending final action.

Auctioneer Arrested For Off-hours Sales At Do Than JePiry

An auctioneer at the Do Than JePiry company store on E Main Street was arrested by Sheriff Joe Rolins for holding sales after 6 p m and before 6 a m in violation of the local plate law. A body of 200 was posted for the hearing in county court next week. The charge is a misdemeanor. The sale began at Jewelry More yesterday. Jeffries Brought Back To Face U S Seed Loan Charge

Wiltting B Jeffries former Houston county tax collector was returned to Dothan from Florida by U S Deputy Marshal and a federal officer. He had been arrested weeks earlier in West Palm Beach on a seed loan fraud charge and later held in Miami. Bond hoped today to secure release as federal charges await grand jury action. Trial on embezzlement charge was postponed due to custody in Florida. The officers planned to return to Miami after delivering him to Dothan.

Midland City Caps Season With 26-6 Victory Over Ashford

Midland City High School capped the 1931 season with a 26 to 6 win over Ashford High before a large crowd. Baldwin and Starling scored on forward passes and Arnett and Grover added two rushing touchdowns. Midland City had defeated Coffer Springs last week 38 to 12.

Two Negroes Admit Theft From Preacher

Dinah Kirkland and Yor Kirkland pleaded guilty in circuit court to theft from a minister’s pocket and receiving or concealing stolen property. They were sentenced to one to two years in the penitentiary after officers found 440 in their possession, prompting an investigation that confirmed a 168 robbery claim. The minister later claimed the funds, and 440 was returned.

Penny Drive Totals $21.04 For Needy Children In County

George Wiggins Confederate Vet Dead at Webb

George M. Wiggins 58, Confederate veteran and prominent Southeast Alabama citizen, died at his daughter Mire J. Giveng’s home in Webb after prolonged illness. He leaves two daughters Mrs. John Walkington of Thamarton and Mrs. Cra Stewart of Cettonwend, among others. 15 Year Old Boy Dies In Hospital After Surgery

A 15 year old boy died in a Dothan hospital following an operation. Survived by six siblings born to Mr. and Mrs. J Jones of Cottonwood. Summer School Shows Increase at University of Alabama

A University of Alabama study of the six year period ending 1931 shows a substantial rise in Summer School enrollment, with 96 Alabama residents represented in the latest term. Augustus Whiddon a one year old Negro admitted stealing $70 from Rufus Wells store in Cottonwood and implicated three others. He later told circuit court he took all blame, freeing Shine Hughes Johnnie Ward and Fulmore Smith who faced charges of receiving or concealing stolen property.

Death of J Morgan Snead Pioneer of Dothan

J Morgan Snead 88 longtime Dothan resident and early settler died at his daughter’s home in Andalusia after a long illness. He helped bring the Atlantic Coast Line railway to Dothan and planned the town site near the A C L railway office. Survived by two daughters, Mrs J Morgan Prentbene and Mrs J J Knox of Andalusia. Two youths held after fatal Geneva County shooting

Adolph Crutchfield, 18, farmer near Geneva, was fatally shot by Clyde Dickson, 20, with Clyde Plekson and Harald Dickson, 23, held on first degree murder charges in Geneva County. Crutchfield died after a wagon ride incident near Spring Creek bridge. The sheriff said the shooting stemmed from a long standing feud. Crutchfield left a widow and a 10 day old daughter.

Handmade Lace Exhibit At Alabama University
