Jefferson Housing Act Ruled Unconstitutional by Alabama Court
The Alabama Supreme Court unanimously holds the 1945 Jefferson County housing statute unconstitutional. Justice Thomas Lawson writes the act was local in character and aimed to block future government housing by public authorities, leaving private enterprise responsible despite acknowledged housing conditions. Louis Moore, taxpayer, challenged the law as a local act under a general-law guise. The ruling upholds the Jefferson Circuit Court decision.
