Relief funds aid for 1838 Alabama students

The pan emergency relief administration will fund 1838 needy students in 21 Alabama colleges and universities. Barry L. Hopkins says aid is based on October 15 1933 enrollment. Students will work on campus in research clerical and library roles earning up to 20 dollars monthly, with college allotments set at 15 dollars per student. College presidents oversee program administration with specific allotments per institution.

Negro communist gets year on libel charge

In Jefferson county Alabama, Pete Turney, a Black man, received a one year prison term and a $750 fine on libel charges. Prosecutors W A Wood, a Black school principal, and Detective J T Moser alleged Turney distributed communistic literature that defamed their characters. The case was heard in Jefferson county misdemeanor court.

Houston County trails state figures in new job applications with 48 cases from July through September and 423 renewals. The Far East empire reportedly increased cotton goods exports 18.6 percent from 1928 to 1932 while the United States fell 46.5 percent in the same period. In the first half of 1934, trends continued to threaten domestic producers.

Religious pilgrimage ends in death and jailings in Alabama

Gunfire erupted aboard a truck carrying 33 African American worshippers from Lawrence county to church services in Athens. A woman, Julie Elliott, was killed. Two men, Lee Brooks and Steve Key, were jailed in Limestone county. Key was wounded and Brooks captured near the church. Key delivered Elliott's body to Decatur for treatment.
