CAA orders DC-6 insulation removal to curb fire hazards
Washington UPI reports the Civil Aeronautics Administration ordered airlines using DC-6 transports to remove fiberglass insulation from cargo areas by 7 p.m. today after findings that soaked insulation with flammable fluids can wick and fuel fires. The move affects American Braniff National Pan American United and Grace, among others, with Sabena and Belgian King also likely to inspect. A DC-6 crash near Bryce Canyon on Oct 24 killed 52, and a guinea pig DC-6 at the crash site showed insulation saturated with hydraulic fluid. Inspections extend to more than 80 aircraft and must be completed by Dec 1.
